Update: This issues seems to have been resolved on the 19 June. Fingers crossed.

Update on this issue: If you are experiencing terrible speeds and latency after 5pm and are on the CLAREINCH exchange (Claremont, Rondebosch, Kenilworth), the issue is exchange related BUT please phone your ISP and tell them about the problem so they can update their problem area notifcations AND put pressure on telkom to fix it. Use the link below to determine your exchange

discover exchange

On the 4th of June my 1Mbps ADSL line and that of another mbb user dropped to unusable speeds. The problem only occurs at busy times (after 5pm weekdays and on weekends) and the line speed spikes between 0.04 and 0.4 Mbps with pings to local servers of over 600ms. So far this seems to be in the Claremont and Wynberg areas of Cape Town.

We want to identify other people on the exchanges having the same problem, so we can have some leverage when getting telkom to sort it out, or so we can organise for project mayhem and blow up the house of the telkom ceo.

Please, if you or your mates are suddenly suffering from intermitent slow internet in the Cape Town region, post on this thread. See this thread for details of this particular peak time unusable speed issue:

Thanks

Hey 21stcn

I live in the kenilworth area (which I guess falls under wynberg or claremont exchange, correct me if Im wrong) and I have had the same problem ever since monday 4th June 2012. From about 2pm onwards the line becomes unusable for gaming. I've with mweb 1Mbps currently and had no issues beforehand, I've tried another isp but still the same problem occurs. Its now saturday and getting pings of over 1000ms, which is just horrible. Download's going under 20kbs using torrents and browsing is quite slow aswell.

I'm also in Kenilworth (on Main Road) and I'm getting 1 Meg speeds on my 4 Meg line consistently. My issues also started near the beginning of June, and I'm currently unable to connect correctly to Xbox Live.

Thanks guys for the feedback. It does seem like there is a definite exchange issue in this area.

Anyone know how we can check which exchange services which area?

Please keep updating this thread. If we have proof that the exchange is ****ed, we can get telkom to attend to it. They do not care about one person calling in on behalf of himself.

I'll keep you updated.

Clareinch is known to be congested.

I'm in Wynberg on 761 with no problems. Perhaps those in Kenilworth can change to the 761 exchange - it's just behind Maynaard Mall.

So the telkom techie called me today. He confirmed that there is definitely congestion on this exchange clareinch and said it was the DSLAM which he 'looked at'. He said he can only fix proper line issues so he can't do anything about exchange but will refer it to a specialist. He also said it is mweb who are responsbile because they control the gateway. I said if I make telkom my isp then they will be responsible to which he agreed and I asked what they would do to which he couldn't answer. Passing the buck? Essentially he said, I would like to help but it is not my role to deal with connections and oversubscribed exchanges.

So you phone telkom, all they can do with a congested exchange is log a fault. Eventually techie calls and he says I must talk to telkom because it is not a 'line fault'. As we can see this is a problem for many people on this exchange. Anyone know how to proceed?

jpmonster you are on the WYNBERG UMC B40B1 (WWG+) Exchange ( http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/WWG+ ) . A lot of people are reporting the same issues on this exchange. Sounds like congestion too.

Wish I could say I knew how to get it fixed :wtf:

When I put my number into that exchange finder it spits out: "You are connected to the CLAREINCH (WCLH) exchange"

My line is working properly now, but last night was terribad with latency. I opened a support ticket with axxess as I transferred my line to them and they responded with this.

Good Morning,
I've just checked your ADSL line and is currently not synchronizing at all. The other reason thats concerning is the fault reported by Telkom, they busy with a maintaince near Cape Town. Could you please check your ADSL cable is plugged in correctly, I'll also reset your ADSl ports.

Having issues as well, though I am in Diep River on the Bergvliet Exchange, started on the night they did their maintainance at the exchange and hasn't been fixed yet.

Download speeds range between 2kbps and 6 kbps,

This pretty much sums it up:
Tracing route to vodacom.co.za [41.1.224.101]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.2.1
2 * 319 ms 323 ms dsl-145-248-01.telkomadsl.co.za [41.145.248.1]
3 341 ms 346 ms * 196.43.39.74]

Ya, regarding the Clareinch exchange... jpmonster you prob saw an improvement this morning because everyone was sleeping/at chruch. My ping is down to 400ms atm and I am guessing it will only get worse. So the techie who looked at the DSLAM did **** all to help us.

I think the maintainance is happening in cape town, check here http://www.telkom.co.za/noticeboard/index.do , but apparently not on Clareinch so it is just plain oversubscription and prob wont improve without telkom intervention.

Please, people on Clareinch exchange with useless latency and bad dl speeds during peak times report on improvements/decline. I will keep you posted on my progress but it seems that my first line fault techie visit did not help at all.

How am I meant to be the first person to finish Inferno Hardcore solo now?
