Slow ADSL speeds frustrating you?

Nope. I couldn't be happier with my connection at the moment. Telkom, just don't bugger it up :D

My problem is not congestion, with all of three users on one exchange. Even high latency wouldn't bug me. It's the erratic pings that get on my tit.

Exactly the type of problem I experienced earlier this evening (no I am not in the Northern part of the country). Erratic speed that was cured by rebooting the router and the ISP resetting the port. In the end it kept both of us busy for at least an hour.

Telkom is a national threat. Hopefully they get addressed now that Dina's boyfriend is no longer in charge.

Problem is that I can't get ADSL ... twice now the techies screwed up my new number at my new place and there's a brand new spanking MSAN 500m from my house.

ISP's passing the buck again and I'm pretty sure this is a rehashed article that is released once every month XD

Most slow downs are due to the ISP overselling its uncapped offering and overloading the IPC.

LLU ....

A well constructed electronic communications system with sufficient redundancy provided by multiple network operators to provide an interconnected ecosystem is what is needed. Sadly the revelations last week on Lets Talk Geek is that while there are rumours of Telkom finally coming to the party in a big way the other big boys are unlikely to play ball.

So what you are saying is that Traceroutes showing very high latency on the second hop is not an indication of congested exchange? From multiple ISP accounts? That latency is terrible at certain times and perfect at others? The evidence is clear what the problem is.

I am sitting with this problem right now. I have logged a fault with Telkom, they will be sending a technician. I have gathered evidence. Hopefully it will be enough to convince them that they need to get it sorted. It angers me that a friend living 2 minutes away from me is on a much lesser populated exchange and he experiences none of the problems I do.

The exchange moving thing is apparently not an option, unless you change physical address. Not gonna happen, just for the sake of internet!

Cybersmart CEO Laurie Fialkov said that they do not have any congestion on their network for their interactive services, such as web surfing, streaming, gaming and the like.

Fialkov said that while exchange congestion exists, it may also be an easy way for ISPs to blame Telkom rather than troubleshoot the problem.

Sorry, but i am going to have to call you out on this one:
cybersmart latency.JPG

This started last week on my exchange in Parow West. Pull the other one Laurie :)

Edit: those are 20 TCP pings on port 80 to www.google.co.za with a 1200ms timeout run every 5 minutes

Telkom also did not say what ADSL subscribers can do if they are suffering from poor service levels.

In a way they did. They said nothing, and there is also absolutely nothing you can do when your exchange/DSLAM is congested, except wait for better days. Any call you log is "solved" with an sms saying your line has been tested and found OK.

Telkom has been promising exchange upgrades and speed upgrades for years now, but I have seen neither hide nor hair of it.
This company makes telling lies look like an Olympic Sport.

kaaaaaaaaaaaaak :p

Isn't it time telkom get the same treatment as cell providers do. If the quality if of the service drops under a certain percentage they can get a hiding.

Telkoms "best effort" services is just giving them a chance to sell something that if it under performs they get away with it.

I would love a 2MB line in my house but iam not going to pay for an installation and afterwards its the same as always. The line get dropped 140 times a month and telkoms says theres nothing wrong with the line.

Had a congested Exchange from 2010 to 2011 when I cancelled ADSL in favor of the 10GB 8ta 3G offering at launch. I did not let Telkom be on the issue, however. I lodged a dispute and won it and received R2100 in ADSL line rental (384k) rebate on my account. I had to keep the normal voice line and it was quite nice to not pay Telkom for nearly 2 years!

What was ironic was that after I got the R2100 rebate, Telkom phoned me about 5 days later to say that the congestion issue was resolved :p
