Slow browsing and inconsistent pingtime

Hey guys

About a week or so i noticed very slow browsing and inconsistent ping times. It lasted for a day and then it was over. 2 days ago my line went totally dead and after calling telkom eventually managed to get the line working again. On using my adsl again i've noticed the same symptoms that I noticed a week ago being slightly slower browsing and inconsistent pingtimes(noticeable when playing games online).

I am 100% positive that nothing is downloading or using up my bandwith in the backround. I have monitored this for a matter of time so before anyone tells me to check for spyware or something , don't bother because I have looked into it hehe :)

I've included the stats on my adsl router page which don't look normal as well as a ping to a local gaming server.

Could anyone tell me what is possibly wrong and what I could do to get it back to normal?

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 36.9 15.0 dB
Line Attenuation 27.9 16.5 dB
Errored Seconds 4 38
Loss of Signal 1 1
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 0 44
Data Rate 384 128 kbps
Latency FAST FAST

Follows with basically the same trend. What's odd is that even when the pings are low they should remain within 2 digits of each other which they clearly don't. I have tried to find out if anyone else has been having similar problems but without any indication on browsing the forums It looks like i'm the only poor soul with this problem at the moment :(

Anyways hope someone knows whats the matter

Your help will be appreciated
Thankyou
Marco

Telkom has to sort out your problem, let them run tests on your line again and see what's up. Also did you check for spyware? JOKING!!

I never know what to do when browsing or latency sucks, so my advice sucks aswell :D

Just a question, what router are you using. If it's a telkom one, go to their shop and swap it out to see if a new one does the trick. Try this before you get a techie to come in as he may charge you if it's the router and not the line. Also before you give your old router in, don't forget to delete your old username and password from it ;)

Judging by those router stats, it doesn't look like a line problem, but I might be wrong. Telkom router however are know for giving random problems.

Seems to be a temporary problem but I hope this does not keep happening as it is really annoying.

Do you believe Father Christmas exists, cause there is a better chance that he does then this is only temporary.

Playboy, what is the stats from the router when there is no problem. The easiest way to figure out if it's the line would be to compare the stats from when there is a problem to the stats from when there isn't. I have heard of the smallest things affecting line quality and it could be that these interferences are less during the night.

It could also be some line interference within your house. Have you moved the router lately? How long is the telephone line that connects the router to the wall? If there are two plugs to connect a telephone line to, have you tried using the other one. Is the connection stable, does it just pop out if you tug on it? There are many thing inside the house that you should also check for, just to be sure ;)

Looks like i spoke to soon, the problem is still persisting. I will try take some suggestions and make sure its not any of the network cables running in the house or some lose connection but I'm quite confident its a problem @ telkoms side.

Can't even play fps games online, pings consistently jumping between 20 and 120, unplayable. :(

I Logged a fault sunday still havent heard any reply. The pings have seemed to stablilise a bit but its still very inconsistent. As i know from the past they should remain within 3 digits of each other. Especially when playing an fps game like counter strike I notice the difference immediately when playing online. Below is a ping :

Could anybody else ping this exact server and show me your results (mayhem.saix.net)

It might look like im bitching over something quite small but it honestly makes a difference and I would like to get it back to how it used to work..

Thankyou

Ping statistics for 196.25.69.221:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 38ms, Maximum = 40ms, Average = 38ms

Since the upgrade, I cant play AOEIII cause my ping is so bad. Very frustrating

Ok guys, perhaps you could explain in simple language for me please: What is a good ping? What affects it? How do I get a better ping? Who do I phone at the idiots? What must I tell them is wrong?

Ok... So i phone telkom helpdesk and query the status of my fault - "it has been cleared" but nothing has been fixed.. I totally give up.

Another disturbing fault I have noticed on the line is that while playing the game online if I increase my rates slightly higher than usual, i.e receive and upload more bandwith i keep getting a ping over 200. In the past I could use the highest rates possible and still mantain as low a ping as always. Something is not right, I honestly dunno how these useless people at the telkom helpdesk are going to help me, ARGG#@##@# FRUSTRATION!!

Does anyone perhaps know a number of somebody high up that will be able to assist me with this technical issue. The people at the helpdesks are incompetent to say the least.
