Slow connections??

Hi,

is anybody else experiencing extremely slow connecttions?

MyADSL is loading slower than usual.

WWW.iol.co.za is almost not working, and www.cnn.com is absent for all practical purposes.

And I'm not capped (yet)!

Yip, can't get to most international sites at the moment. Very slow load times or gateway timeouts.

I don't have any trouble with local sites but international sites are extremely slow.

According to the SAIX noticeboard ( http://www.noticeboard.saix.net ) a router in New York is giving problems.

They've probably routed us through the "capped" line until it's resolved.

Is all of South Africa's international traffic routed via this one router in New York? I was under the impression that at least some of our traffic is routed via England (London I think).

Why would a router failure on an international circuit reduce many local sites to never-never land?

Another question... since the SAFE cable is operational, why can't we route to the east???

Haven't found a local site that gives problems.

www.iol.co.za loads fine for me.

I'm no techie, but it would seem to me that all hardware, at some stage, will fail. Therefore, it's surely not a question of "if" but rather "when" some vital piece of silicone is going to fall over. So why the hell don't they have a contingency plan in place for when it does happen? Like today . . .

Excuse my ignorance here,but what would happen if that building burnt down,what would happen then.
I find it strange that INT links depend on NY.

I can't connect to amazon.co.uk but I could connect to gamespot.com & wwe.com. However I agree that the local sites like kalahari.net loads very fast

Telkom runs a pretty complex network, with multiple peering links and international bandwidth.

When a router goes down, BGP will sort out routing via other possible routes, but those routes might be extremely slow. It's impossible to say which sites are going to be affected.

There appears to have also been a peering problem with Internet Solutions which would explain why some local sites also died.

This is life on the internet, no matter which ISP you use. Stuff breaks. Routers go down. But the internet carries on. Mostly...
