My internet started becoming extremely laggy about 4 weeks ago. It used to only happen during prime time, but it has steadily gotten worse and is now constantly terrible.
I have spoken to both MWEB (my ISP) and Telkom about it, neither of which helped.
Apparently it is a congested exchange, but I have no idea how to make sure of this.
I am currently on the MWEB uncapped 2mbps account.

Some stats:

Traceroute taken at 3:30pm 14/08/2013 on my MWEB account.
This is the IP for telkom.co.za., because if I tried to ping the web address it would not respond.

ANY help in getting this fixed would be GREATLY appreciated, as no one at Telkom or MWEB has been successful in fixing it.

Thanks in advance.

531 number?
You should see how crap it is in Thornton! All over the place!
Reported the fault with Axxess and Telscum dropped me down to 4meg like I would be happy with that as a solution!

Ye 531. I have a few friends in Pinelands who say that theirs is fine, all with various ISPs.
I'm tired of it, all I want is to identify the problem myself so that I can chase people to fix it, instead of asking them to identify it first. That always gets me nowhere.

Your first hop is to the exchange the dslam you are on might be over congested or there is issues with your port. My bet will be that the dslam is congested, phone telkom and ask them to reset your port if that doesnt work explain to them that the latency to the exchange is over 1000ms and that the technician must check your port on the dslam.

If you get lucky enough and the techy phones you while working on it, be very nice to him and ask him to move you to a less congested dslam they have done that a few times for me.

In some instances a short on the line can also cause it but that can only get picked up if someone is send out to your house and is best to keep as a last resort.

Its not an ISP issue its a telkom exchange issue.

I'm also in Pinelands, also a 531 number, with Mweb uncapped, Telkom 1 mbps, also pathetic response so that I virtually have no access. Infuriating.
My stats from speed test:
Download Speed: 413 kbps (51.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 184 kbps (23 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 826 ms

Telkom just gave me the proverbial “you too far from the exchange” and dropped me to 4mbps on Tuesday.

What it is is the overcrowded DSLAM and these 100 year old wires that are rusted and corroded on all these poles down the road all the way to Pinelands that is the problem! They should replace them with our tax money & line rental they screw us for.

I don’t even know how they can charge me line rental on this line my great grandfather paid for 100 years ago when you still had those wind-up phones before even “nommer assebleif” is how old this cables is I’m surprised it works at all !

You do know that pinelands is a place for the newly wed or nearly dead, and the nearly dead side has woken up to the joys of surfing (blame their adult kids who long ago emigrated and want them to skype ) so with those rusted lines its a miracle there is adsl at all.

ROFL you crack me up hosehead.
Sadly you probably half right. Futubox rtmp xbmc stream is unwatchable tonight.
Zero speed from OpenWeb or Axxess or Afrihost.

Also in Pinelands, was on MWEB 1mb uncapped, switched over to OpenWeb 2mb, sorted.

Hi

The supplied trace routes could indicate exchange congestion, unfortunately there are many factors that could affect this hop, please send me a PM with your contact and ADSL details and I will assist in hopefully resolving or @least giving you an answer on when it will be.

Regards ^CO
