Aren't they supposed to be cheaper?

I look at this with a 7D and 18-135 IS lens at R20,371.00 and Cats Digital R20,989.00

However - it appears the lens is R4,619.00 alone (Kalahari) and R3,499.00 (Makro)

http://www.makro.co.za/p/35699/canon-18---135mm-is-lens/ and the camera

Is it the same lens?

EDIT : The camera itself is about R15,000.00 ... so for R18,500.00 I'm getting the 'kit'?

That Orms price is about R1k cheaper than dealer price so if you're looking for that specific lens then grab it.

i was just going to mention Orms, I buy from them because their prices are cheaper plus it can be delivered directly to you. just be careful when buying kits cause what looks like a great deal isn't. i.e. that extra lens might not be worth that extra few grand.

Yes but the kit certainly gets you going and you then don't spend the next four years deciding on what lens to get for your now defunct camera.

i meant that some kits advertise two lenses to get people to buy and usually the second lens is a waste of time. you should get the standard lens with the kit, then do some research for any future lenses before buying.

4 years!!! way too long for me to wait.

There is something to be said for the kit lens though. I bought a 50D + 18-200mm IS kit about two years ago. While I regret not getting the body and either the 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM or 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM immediately, I did make a small profit on the lens. I don't remember the exact figures, but the difference in price between the kit and the body was about 2/3 of the lens on its own, and I got somewhere in-between. Made about £100 profit if I remember correctly.
