You are looking at around R12500 for Premium, R7500 for Standard, for the server license and then around R1500 per Premium CAL and and R600 per Standard CAL.

What do you want to use it for? If only for simple file sharing, then a Linux distro such as SME Server should do the job just as well.

Agreed, weigh up all your options before running into SBS - although if you use all the functionality then I believe its worth the money....

If your looking at thin clients then you still need terminal services. Gets really fun when you start going this route.

THis is the client software correct, or do we still need to have an OS on the
workstation for users

The two types of license that you would require are Device and Client Access.

Device licenses are installed on a machine to legalise that particular machine. In this case your server would require 1 x Server license (Premium or Standard) and each client computer would also require a device license (WinXP, Win7 etc). If you buy an OEM client device then it already has a license, e.g. HP laptop.

The CAL, Client Access License, is required for every connection made to the server, from a client computer, licensed per device. Assuming your SBS server will be doing authentication, then each PC would require a CAL.

So, assuming you have 10 PCs and 1 server, for SBS you would require:

1 x server license (Premium or Standard)
10 x OS licenses (WinXP, Win7, although these may already be present)
10 x SBS CALs

Thin client requirements are somewhat more complex.

You need:

1 x Premium Server license for the 1st server
1 x second (included in the price) Premium Server license for the 2nd server (this server is the terminal server, and cannot be hosted on the 1st server)
1 x SBS CAL for each thin client (Or Citrix Essentials CAL)
1 x TSCAL for each thin client
1 x license for each client application, e.g. office 2007

The thin client costs between R3000 and R9000 depending on what you buy, you save by not requiring an AV license or OS license for each client, and a thin client will last forever. I sell Thin Clients....
