So I know this thread probably exists, but there's more to my story.

I'm looking at a car, second hand, max 2 years old with max 30k km on the clock.

My budget is R210 000 - tops.

I currently have a 1.4 fiesta, I'm very happy with the car, but want / need a bit more grunt for the roads and the amount of mileage I do every day and I've got a pretty good deal to sell my current car to a friend, so hence why I'm going to take on the upgrade.

I'd love a fiesta 1.0 ecoboost titanium, I struggle to find much better value for money in that price bracket, with relatively low running costs as well. I mean I could go for a used ST, which is great, but I'm scared I'd just have a lead foot and rip through tyres and fuel.

I currently have the 1.4 trend 2014, so it would need to be something with more gadgets than what I currently have to make sense to make the switch.

So my two main questions,

  • Will I have turbo problems.
  • Is there anything else with as much power and gadgetry in this price bracket?

I ask because my Dad's ranger blew a turbo this weekend at 60 000km, he drives it well and it hasn't been pushed, so I'm scared of the same happening to me, I know it will be under warrantee, but I don't want the inconvenience, I've had too many troublesome cars in the past, my current Fiesta being the exception and I don't want to open pandora's box again!

I'll probably drive it for 2 years, put about 40 000km on it and then look for something else again,

So, any opinions?

Forget about "what if"

Get a car with a decent service plan that will cover mechanical problems. For that type of cash I would have gone for an E90 BMW 320d. Personal choice because of the power/economy combination. You should be able to find one with relatively low KM's, with lots of motorplan left.

I am well pleased with my Ecoboost Titanium, and my economy sits at an average of between 5.2 and 5.5L/100km combined.

I also agree with this, however, I would forfeit quite a few features, although not many, I'm a bit of a gadget freak, so I would be looking at the Titanium with the Sony sound system and the heated leather seats, a decent sound system in a car is a huge "must" for me, and the 3 series my sister had, well, it wasn't great lol. I also wouldn't get the low running costs, tires, servicing etc etc... I do love those cars however.

Turbos are consumables in my book. They do go if driven hard. The Rangers had a couple of engine niggles so that shouldn't put you off of turbo chargers.

+1 for German mentions. Loving my Beemer - although not a diesel, so it's raping my fuel costs with a broomstick - in terms of everyday toys, it has them all.

I too am very happy with my Ecoboost Fiesta. Got it in Jan 2013. No problems at all. I average 5.5. 6 when I drive a bit faster...

For that amount of money, you can buy a new one.

May I ask if you have the Sony sound system in yours? If so, how is it? I had the standard Ford one in my Trend, and I have had many people comment on how great the sound was and asked if I had upgraded it.

Do you do mostly highway driving? Do you stick to 120? I do a lot of highway mileage and I normally follow traffic in the fast lane, so 140 average, and I average about 7.6 l/100 in the 1.4.

Listen to this man. I got a 2011 version last year for the same kind of money. Motorsport, sunroof, xenon, etc I couldn't be more please with my purchase.

Fiesta ST doesn't have enough power to rip through tyres. :whistling:

Jokes aside I can echo the other suggestions here about getting a bigger car that's slightly older/more mileage, but with balance of plan left. BMW 320d is a good bet. You might even be able to get a nice Lexus IS250 for the money. Both of these cars will perform far better as a "luxury" repmobile than a small Ecoboost Fiesta.

Otherwise you can get a low mileage 2013+ Honda Accord (petrol or diesel) for the same money.

If you're dead set on a small boosted hatchback, the ST makes a lot of sense and would probably be my pick of the vehicles in that class and price bracket.

Not necessarily the case anymore, and definitely not in the price range OP is looking at. I doubt he'll lose too much on a R210,000 Lexus when it comes time to sell in two years, probably the same as an Ecoboost Fiesta.

Firstly you are looking at it the wrong way by comparing your 1.4 based on capacity with the modern Turbo car.

Look strictly at Power vs Torque figures to compares...forget the capacity or technology producing it.

No you won't have Turbo problems. This isn't the 80's, the 1.0 Ecoboost isn't really even pushing that hard either.

I bought a Turbo car with 98 000km on and in more than 60 000km now I don't have anything near a Turbo problem. Not to even mention that if you should have a Turbo problem and stay away from the stealerships it's a non-issue anyway.

Supposedly my car should have endless issues...but all those with said issues are the Fast & Furious back yard mechanic modding community. Leave the thing stock and trust that the engineers who built it knew what they were doing and you will be fine.

HOWEVER

R210k for a 1l baby car? **** that.

I bought my Golf 5 GTI for less money and it's a bigger and better car in every respect than even a brand new Ecoboost. If you put the choice behind me right now I would buy the GTI again instead.

Maybe a Polo GTI is an option for your price? It is more car for the money than the very basic Ecoboost in contrast. I have no idea what they price for. I can tell you that my "old" GTI has everything except Xenons. Heated Seats, Dual Clutch Gearbox, Heated Mirrors, Leather Seats, Sunroof etc.

*****

The only time to ever consider thinking about your turbo is when you were absolutely caning it on your way home. And I mean driving it flat out in every gear. Then either cruise home the last few kilometres or drive it flat taps to your garage and leave it idling for a minute before shutting it off.

Chances are you'll actually almost never do the above, as much as you like to tell yourself you would do it every day.

The Auris XRD is pretty underated. It's not a great looking car but my friend has one and the E90 320d and wow does the Auris have the oomph over the BMW. It's also super light on fuel.

Sony system is good. Nothing like the B&O in an Audi but you get what you pay for. 60/40 bias towards highway driving. I usually stick the cruise control on 95km/h and relax:)

Here's a good example: You can get yourself a 2014 A3 Sedan with 22,000kms and balance of 5 year/100,000km plan for R285,000, and this has got more bells and whistles than you could get bored.

Or for R70,000 less you can have a little Fiesta Ecoboost... i know where my money would go.

Looking more at a budget of around R210,000:

2013 A4 with 66000kms and balance of plan
2013 Accord 2.0, 50,000kms, balance of plan
Audi A1 s-line, 2014 with 24000kms and balance of plan

Things get even better if you look at slightly older models.
