Smart cameras the most effective way to protect against theft

I honestly don't get how you flippantly speak about your neighbour who has people invading his property.

Without the walls, he's literally just over there, getting robbed! You shrug your shoulders.
What do you want me to do? Bake him some koeksisters? Install a camera system for him for mahala?

You would not make nonsense statements like this if you were a licenced, and carrying, firearm owner.
How is that statement nonsense?
Do tell us what you would do if someone barges into your home with a weapon pointed at you.
How would your weapon help you in this situation?

We had cameras installed that we manage ourselves. They go off whenever the wind blows too hard, at night it picks up lights from passing cars etc. Unless the camera is in a place where there is literally no movement from any lights or shadows or leaves or birds you will get constant false alarms. Despite that, the cameras still give us peace of mind, we can check if the inside alarm goes off or when we are away from home, or if we wake up from a noise. We are actually going to get more cameras as we want to see over the perimeter wall into the street as well as some inside cameras.

Hmmm.. we have a collection of great footage of cars being stolen or broken into from the company car park over the years.

The point being, cameras by themselves are useless unless there is some kind of supervision and response, otherwise, all you have is a nice video of what happened.

You're referring to old outdated dof cameras where you see things after the fact, SMART AI cameras give you reliable real time alerts like at 2am in the morning in my case when I was fast asleep dreaming of diving in the Maldives and I was actively able to avoid getting burgled, ok by the time I reacted and decided what to do he had the window open but he wasn't through the second line of defence which was a burglar bar and the third and fourth line of defences(alarm and barrier gate between rooms and living areas).

We had a cat burglar in our area that we simply couldn't catch with nightly patrols etc since he was clearly well trained moved only between yards by jumping over fences and hiding in the dark since our area has large stands with lots of trees, so I was tempted to let him enter the living areas while backup arrived to surround the house from outside and we could finally catch him, however after seeing the speed with which he opened the window and the fact that I wasn't armed at that point I decided my own families safety was more important than catching him at that point and hit the panic for armed response who normally take 5 minutes to respond from previous trials.

Most modern cameras work on AI, not just motion detection. Things have improved dramatically in that department.

I have Reolink AI cams for a few years now, key word being "AI"...I had lots of false positives before AI with the older Reolinks to the point that push notifications became useless as it sent notifications for things like trees moving in the wind or cloud shadow movement, those dumb cams were just that, dof.

Now however they've gotten really good to the point where I only get one or maximum 2 false alerts per month so my push notifications are extremely useful, actually helped me identify an intruder around 2 years ago before he got into the house or triggered the alarm.

Also the Reolink DUO 2 is a game changer, full colour night vision and AI, with wall to wall 180 degree coverage means it's close to impossible for criminals to sneak up to them or past them, the coverage is fantastic. One camera does the job of 2 but with less cabling and a seamless view.

Replaced 2 cameras with the Duo 2. Fantastic camera. Set it to switch on the camera lights when it detects someone, so they know they are being watched.

A nice friendly Roti, is enough, to make most just keep on walking by.

Problem with cameras, to make them useful, they need to be continually monitored.

What I do appreciate about them, is if I hear something, I can check the cams to see, what I will be walking into, before I open the door.

If I don't like what I see, I phone the Security company and the police, and tell, them they must make snappy, or they will need to use a body bag, if they are tardy.

Yeah 19voetsek called, they want their old tech back boet, we've come a long way since then, welcome to 2024.;)

Where have you people been living seriously?

Just go get some REOLINK DUO 2's from takealot or directly from instacams website and thank me later. Tip you'd need a lot less cams to cover the same areas if using Reolink DUO 2's so don't let the price discourage you or compare to cheaper cams as you're essentially getting at least 2 or more cameras for that price. Also remember the colour night mode and AI detection are extremely important.

I'm looking at one of these for our front yard. That's quite the pano.

Really a game changer I've replaced most of my older Reolinks with these and one with the FE-P 360 degree dome camera, the duo's are seriously a game changer, so much easier to run wiring too since you need less camera mounting points and blind spots have virtually been eliminated.

Do yours have AI? Did you read the article?

I have a Unifi set up, but also have them connected to Apple Home. I find that Apple Home side actually has a pretty good detection hit ratio, just a bit slower to detect than the local Unifi side.

It still does get confused sometimes, especially when it rains and there are droplets of water it thinks are people. Got woken up a few times with false notifications due to this.

Camera's are not a silver bullet. In some ways they are very effective, in others less so.

Camera's to me are best at discouraging people from the area, gardeners, maid's etc from stealing. If there is a chance they would be recognized its an issue for them. On the other hand I have seen many times over the years when a clear picture of robbers was posted with zero results. If it is not someone you know what are you going to do with that picture??? Unlike all the US TV shows to my knowledge SA does not have the ability to search a face against any kind of local crime DB.

Criminals from outside the area would only worry about a camera if they feared it was being monitored.

Another one,sigh....do people just come comment without reading or understanding articles on MYBB now?

Nice, they've got a pretty good home assistant integration:
I'll probably install their doorbell one, been wanting to swap that to a video camera one as don't have someone there during the week.
My fear with those doorbell cameras is having it stolen. Couple of grand electronics on display for any crook to break off and run away with easypeasy. Urgh.
