Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has expanded the eHomeAffairs online portal so that any South African citizen over 16 years old can apply for a new Smart ID Card.

Permanent residents are not South African citizens.

They can be if they want to. They actually offered my wife to vote in these last elections.
What they don't tell you is that you are tacitly revoking your citizenship in your other country if you take up full SA citizenship.
I think you have to have lived here for 10 years.

Just be warned that there still seems to be bugs in the system.

Already paid R800 for a R400 passport and am no closer to making an appointment.

Suggest checking if ABSA's infernal SureCheck is working before starting the payment process on the DHA website.

Don't understand why there is no option to pay with a credit card immediately on the DHA website like you can with any other e-commerce website on the planet.

If the travel visa processing agencies have no problem accepting payment like that, why is it not an acceptable payment option for the DHA?

So they would revoke my Swiss citizenship while my South African wife would have continued dual South African/Swiss citizenship?

That depends on the laws of your other country. SA can't revoke another countries citizenship.
