Smart ID card online applications going well: Home Affairs

I am only given the option of making an appointment at 3 banks in Gauteng ... nothing in Cape Town. To make matters worse, apparently the biometrics scanner at the local Home Affairs (Somerset West) doesn't work, so I have to go to Paarl or Bellville to get the Biometrics done. So far it has not been as easy as they claim it has...

any news regarding passport online?

Apparently they are not currently accepting applications from naturalised citizens, citizens born outside of South Africa or permanent residents. Are you any of these?

it is a pilot project, it will roll out to the other ages later. Maybe also to the other citizens as well.

Indeed. I've found out though that the age restriction only applies when applying for an ID card through the website. The restriction on ID cards only being available to South African-born citizens applies across the board whether you're applying at a DHA office or through the website. No doubt both restrictions will be lifted in due course once they're satisfied all is working well.

In the meantime if you're a South African-born citizen you can still apply at a DHA office for your ID card regardless of your age.

this seems pilot + easy money making. like how they change the period of roadworthy certificate from 6 to 2 months.

And banks? Can I just go to a FNB and apply there?

No, at the banks you must have applied online and have a booking. It only registers on their system at the time of your booking. You choose your booking after your application has been submitted.

Yip, no walk-ins accepted at the banks. The system won't allow them to even if they wanted to. Which makes sense. Walk-ins are the main reason normal DHA offices are so swamped in the first place. Forcing people to use a booking system brings a bit of order to the system and prevents crazy queues. They probably will never implement a booking system at normal DHA offices though because that would prevent a large portion of the population who don't have internet access from accessing DHA services.

so just to confirm,

no non-SA born citizens, (naturalized citizen accepted?)
no people under 30 years old? my B-Day is in a month till Im 30, so does the 1st condition exclude me?

also only 4 banks in JHB not any and sundry FNB branches.

ID Card at DHA office:
South African-born citizens only of any age

ID Card through website:
South African-born citizens only between 30 and 35

That excludes naturalised citizens, or citizens born outside of South Africa.

good to know, so I cant get a ID card at either avenues..... (non SA born)
so I must hang on to my green ID book that's falling apart, and has a photo of me when I was 10.....

interesting looks at the casino, think Im 10 years old, and think my ID is fake....

You can still apply for a new ID at a DHA office, you will just get issued with a normal green ID book though until the restrictions are lifted.

but no ID cards? as the regular ID book is bulky and unwieldy.
DL is a card and fits easily inside a wallet, but ID book is a pain...... especially when I look 10 years old....

never did understand why SA moved away from DL inside your ID book,
but I suppose its due to international norms...

wonder if they will change passports to biometric type soon....
my foreign one already has that....
.

Do you select "first Issue" or "reissue" when applying online for a smartID?

It's ambiguous since if you've never had an ID, it would be First Issue wheras if you already have the book it could be either First Issue of a card or Re-issue of the book as a card.

edit : it's re-issue
