I have also been considering taking advantage of the data sim special and just changing my number. Notifying friends and family is not a problem, but letting your bank, medical aid etc. etc. etc. know is a pain and years later you find out they never updated their database anyway.

Had a good chuccle at the idea of selling your RICAd sim on the black market. Personally I wouldn't want to go to court/jail for fraudulent activities someone else did under my name.

LMAO, just deny, deny, deny! "I lost it ages ago your honour - never knew anything bad could happen! :("

:p

Also gave consideration to the problems that may arise with the various institutions we deal with, but I've got most communication with them via email anyway - I hate talking to banks or medical aid firms, etc. So I really shouldn't have an issue in that regard.

Look, I could even do without the porting - I don't have that many people that I actually call, so I could still go with a new CellC number and keep my RICA'd MTN sim as a backup or sell it off on the blackmarket :p :D

I am contemplating doing the same.....lol
I don't call a lot...its just a hassle to let everyone know my new number.....hence I would prefer porting

It takes one Facebook update to get everyone in line and then perhaps a voicemail on the MTN sim. ;)

I hate the damned thing as well, but it's ok for some leisure or just to pass the time.

I took the plunge and am now using a pre-paid Cell-C promotional data SIM in my Nokia N900.

The rates don't look too bad; R1.50 per minute and R0.50 per SMS all day.
http://www.cellc.co.za/packages/easychat/compare
I have yet to make an actual voice call but have made and received several Skype/Google Voice calls. Video calling works well too.

It would be nice to be able to add an SMS bundle though.

Good to hear.
But are those the actual rates? Where does that come from?
Also, how is the billing going to work on that if you've not loaded any airtime?

At the bottom of this page:
To recharge for voice calls/SMS/MMS or data in excess of the included 2GB/5GB, the usual Cell C process applies: You must load pre-paid airtime, which is subject to the "all day" prepaid tariff.
I can confirm that SMSs are definitely charged at R0.50.
Also, how is the billing going to work on that if you've not loaded any airtime?
I have the pre-paid SIM so I have to recharge first.
Did you get my new number?

Yes, what took you so long?...;)

ha ha....was waiting to port my number....after all the delaying and the Cell C rep not answering my PM's on how to port and the stores saying its not possible to port.
I said what the heck and bought it.
loving my phone now...made a skype call just now and feels good not to worry about data...aah the freedom.

just for info.....was at Cell C sandton city and was not impressed with the store reps, they are quite clueless when you ask them technical questions.
Cell C at Morningside shopping centre are more clued up and more helpful....so I bought my SIM from there.

The only slight niggle I have is, In my phonebook My SIM number does not show up on my android phone and when I tried to set it using my friends blackberry it said access denied. Its not a biggie ....since it doesn't affect voice or data calls....Anyone know how to fix this?

It has been confirmed it is possible to port a number to a pre-paid promotional data SIM, see here.

The only thing I am missing is the ability to load an SMS bundle.

Has anyone sent an MMS on a promotional data SIM?

I set fMMS up on my Nokia N900 as per the settings here, but got the following error message:
Operation failed
MMSC: 200_OK
BODY: {'Transaction-Id': '18688', 'Response-Text': 'No credit / Billing error', 'MMS-Version': '1.0', 'Message-Type': 'm-send-conf', 'Response-Status': 'Error-service-denied', 'Message-ID': '...'}

It looks like I have insufficient airtime, but my balance is R3.43. How much do Cell-C charge to send an MMS?

Just sent a mms to my friend to test and it worked...no problems.
