It has been confirmed it is possible to port a number to a pre-paid promotional data SIM, see here.

The only thing I am missing is the ability to load a data bundle.

Do we know if this is possible yet or not....?

That or alternatively can this DATA sim special (24BG) be "bolted" onto an existing cell C contract....? (which would be the best thing since sliced bread of course)

Yeah, but I don't think they care. The inactivity of the cell C rep on the forum tells me that :(
Trevor replied, well not him personally, one of his Customer Experience Representatives, as follows:
You can buy pre-paid SMS bundles from R39 for 100 SMS’s at any leading retail store.
:D

Weird thing is, on their website I can only find information about adding an SMS bundle to a contract.

Yeah it's a prepaid SIM, so basically you buy the R39 SMS bundle like any prepaid Cell C user.

I've opted to keep my MTN sim as a backup for worst case scenario's and won't be porting my number.
2 RICA'd sims are worth 10 in the black market :D

It looks like R39 for 100 SMSs is the only option for pre-paid, and they don't seem to be available online either. :(

Ok, so I've had my 60GB promotional sim in my SGS for the last 2 weeks or so and really don't have any complaints.

I opted to not port my number, so that I still have a back-up sim card for worst case scenarios as I mentioned before.

I've not yet hooked up my dongle to a PC or laptop, so I don't have any feedback in that regard, but for the first two weeks of December, I loan it to a colleague and he said the installation of the software was painless and speeds were great.
I think he'll be leaving Vodacom and getting one of these deals for himself :D

Downloaded the speedtest.net app a few weeks ago to the phone and speeds to the WA server in Newlands have been constant around the 2Mbps down and 1.5Mbps upload and pings varying between 190 to 350ms.

Just did another test now and I've got 2463kbps down, 1292kbps upload and 139ms ping.
Another test now to Jerusalem show 881kbps down, 78kbps upload and 425ms ping.

Now I browse alot, use apps alot like, Facebook, Twidroyd, MyBB, XDA devlopers, youtube, Gtalk and Gmail.
Youtube vids stream instantly to the phone with no hassles or pauses, under 5 seconds to load and instant play with no buffering.

In the last week I've asked a friend in the UK to setup and FTP server at his house for me and asked him to leave some music and vids on there for me to download.
Downloaded an FTP app: AndFTP for my phone and an unrar app called eFile.
Have been downloading at various times of the day and night and getting speeds do not drop below 100kbps - so I'm chuffed with that :D

I reckon the downloading from the ftp could be faster, but I'm being held back by his upload speed and whatever other downloads and generic web usage his got running at his place. His got a 24Mb line, so I should be getting more juice :p
But I'm very happy with what I'm currently getting out of him, the CellC network and my phone.

On the telephony side of things, I load airtime with no hassles, use USSD codes to check my airtime and data balance directly with the SGS.
I do wish that there was an option to go to per second billing.
R1.50 for a 20 second call is a bit hectic.
I don't load anything more that R25 at a time, because I don't really make a lot of calls.
But I think I've recharged at least 3 times in the last week or so.
My calls are always sweet and short most of the time.

I used Skype once thus far for a call.
I was in Sea Point at CallAPizza at around 10pm one night and called my buddy in the UK.
The latency was terrible really, and I couldn't hear him too clearly, though he mentioned he could hear me just fine.

Ditto. I've also heard of so many people who've been can only be reached from certain networks after porting, and not just immediately after porting, sometimes the problems reappear after a year or so.

Tethering has worked well on my N900, no installation was required in Ubuntu and Windows required Ovi Suite.
It's a good way of burning your unused data at the end of the month!

My N900 runs the full speedtest.net flash site! ;)
Best I got was 8.80Mbps down, but didn't have a camera handy to take a pic. :(
Here's me getting 6.46Mbps down though.

Tell us more about your phone and I'll update the first page with the details.

Well I've got nothing to tether with besides my AC Ryan media player, but I need to get the wireless dongle for it first.
I've been without a PC for a few months as my needs "degraded" to simply watching movies whenever I am at home.
Internet needs are fullfilled with the 3G directly to a handset or while at the office.
I haven't played any games seriously for well over 12 months now.

I can get to the full flash site as well, but don't really feel the need for it. :)
Your handset will always get faster speeds as I'm limited to 7.2Mbps and you're at 10Mbps :p

What is it that you'd like me to mention about my phone?

Try this app for checking your balance through USSD:

I thought we have the option of migrating between Easychat Per Second, Easychat Standard and Easychat Allday (the default):

I've made lots of Skype calls, generally its been very good. I've made some Skype Video calls too, it's worked well where the other person has had sufficient uplink, but someone with stuck on a 384k ADSL is going to struggle with only a 128kbps uplink.

Ok, wasn't aware of the changes between packages - that'll teach me to RTFM or RTFWebsite :p

I haven't tried it myself, so let us know how you do it.

O/T: I've done the maths and paying a higher rate for per-second billing has never looked like it would work for me. I guess if there's something that can be said in under 30 seconds I'll say it by SMS, or more recently, IM.

I set fMMS up on my Nokia N900 as per the settings here, but got the following error message:

It looks like I have insufficient airtime, but my balance is R3.43. How much do Cell-C charge to send an MMS?
It turns out you have to call 140 and request that MMS be activated first.
MMS are charged at R1.00.

I am having this problem on my iPhone 3Gs - just sits on Edge constantly, no matter where I am. Does anyone have a non-hackandslash fix for this? I went to the local Cell C store and the woman behind the counter looked at me like I was nuts then told me that I can return the Speedstick.

That doesn't exactly help me, now does it? *sigh*
