hi, I'd like to piggy back on this thread please..sorry dd ;-)

I've got the same router SMC 7904BRA and need help with Torrents and "port forwarding /opening please". A friend at work advised some settings under the NAT / Special Application tab but no luck. Two days ago I downloaded a 650MB file (Smallville s6ep01) in over 2 days! And then I found it had no sound!

Please could someone PM me (and dd1313 too I guess) to help us?

Tia!

You have to put the router in bridged mode. Look in the manual to see how this can be done dd1313.

Flekus you can also put the router in bridged mode and dial up from windows. This should help with any ports that are blocked ;) Again look in the manual :p

Ok it seems that you are new at this and haven't got a connection the internet through dsl as of yet.

Ok so you have 2 choices. You either put your router in bridged mode or pppoe mode. In bridged your windows machine connects to the internet through the router and in pppoe the router connects to the internet. In pppoe mode you router connects to the internet and handles all the traffic that your machine requests without you having to dial up. You also get the advantage of the routers firewall.

To put your router in bridged mode read page 61 of the manual, assuming that I downloade the same manual.

To put your router in pppoe mode read page 64.

The settings that you have to use under vpi/vci is 8/35 respectively. In pppoe mode you will notice that you have to enter the adsl username and password into the router. In bridged mode you have to create a new network connection from within windows using the wizzard (start>setting>network connections>new connection wizzard: next> connect to inter...> set up manually>broadband requires username...>fill in next>insert adsl codes>....)

Any more questions welcome!

No you dont. I've got the same router and even if you want to use it in bridged mode you still can even if it's set to pppoe. I have a number of machines sharing one connection and at the same time have several others using the router as if it was in bridged mode.

  1. Go to your routers advanced setup
  2. WAN>ATM PVC>VC1> Set as shown > Save settings
  3. LAN>Lan IP Set as shown. You wont use an ip address pool if you want to use self assigned IP addresses for port forwarding
In XP set up a network connection with similar settings to this

NAT>Virtual Server. This is where you set up your port forwarding.

  1. Set the IP address of the machine running the torrent software in LAN IP Address.
  2. Protocol type is TCP
  3. The Lan Port is the port your torrent software is set to use, put this same number in Public port too. If it uses a range of ports enter that instead in both fields - ie 22001-22010.
  4. Put a tick in enable and click add

EDIT - if your torrent software supports UPnP you can also enable that and it should handle the ports. Its not as secure but it might help in a pinch.
Thanks for that.
