Hi All

Don't know if this has already been mentioned, but you can send an sms for less than 2 cents with MXit (http://www.mxit.co.za/).
They've been up and running for a good few months.

From the website:
=======================================================
MXit is a message exchange program for your cell phone. That means you can chat (edit: text) to people on their PC's and to other MXit users on their mobiles, from your mobile, anywhere in the world. Communication has never been easier.

With MXit, you can send a message of up to 2000 characters. It's great for organizing a night out, or simply saying hello. And not only can you chat to other MXit users, but you can also connect to MSN messenger, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL messenger or Jabber communities.

You can download MXit for FREE. That's right. It's absolutely FREE. And best of all, to send a message costs you less than 2 cents per message. (That is 2 South African cents and is billed by your service provider and added to your GPRS data cost) That's because MXit runs on GPRS/3G. (The technology that connects your mobile to the Internet) Great way to cut down on your SMS bill, isn't it?
=======================================================

Apologies if this has already been announced, but maybe not everyone saw it. ;)

It works great on MTN :D
ok on Vodacom :)
and let's not even mention Cell-C :mad:
(I have to buy a MTN starter pack with a miniscule amount of airtime to use this because my cell contract is with Cell-C!)

Regards,
D

If u hav a Nokia S60 symbian phone, AgileMessenger is better, although i think they'v started charging a fee for it, but the one iv downloaded when it was free still work perfectly, and with Agile u can send Voice msgs aswell, like PTT.

agilemessenger is much better. but yes, they started charging a fee for agile messenger and on my s60 symbian, agile used to work until one day it jus stopped working.
mxit also is really cheap, its almost free, and daevor ive neva experienced any problem with using mxit on a cellc contract, i experienced more problems with vodacom.

mxit is nice but it requires people to be online with their mobiles, so you still have to send an sms to get your friends to logon to MXit, nobody really leaves it open/online when they not using it which is the problem...

thats y S60 symbian fones r cool, u can minimize mxit and use your fone normally while mxit is still running! :)

Oh how about giving them a 'mis-call' to indicate to them to log on.

mas: I took my phone to the technical guy who answers the questions on the mxit forum, and he couldn't get it to work. Tried lotsa different stuff. As soon as he puts his own sim (MTN) in my phone, it works, but not with my (Cell-C) sim. :-(

thats odd, but neways, i use vodacom on mxit now as i rather use it on prepaid rather thn my contract. but i found it much better on cellc. maybe now it has changed, or maybe it cud be different areas.
but ya cellc's gprs can be crappy sumtyms, i have noticed that, not whilst using mxit!
but thx to mxit for a gr8 prog. :)

The data charges associated with sending an email are really low (compared to SMS charges, even if you are paying R2/MB) -- what I am trying to find is an email to sms gateway - then I could send all my sms's as email which would get charged on a per MB rate. Sending SMS (particularily international) is just way way way to expensive.

Anyone know of a email to sms gateway (doesnt even have to be free, just hopefully a lot cheaper that vodacoms international sms rates) ??

Hello, yes MXit runs differently on different Networks and on different phones. It also depends on where you are since GPRS nodes for the different networks differ from area to area... so you might find that Vodacom works better in one place and CellC better in another.

You will find a lot more information on this, as well as offline notification at http://forum.mxit.co.za. :cool:
