SMS Messages Getting Lost

I used to believe that SMS messages sent to your phone while your phone was off or out of reception would be stored and transmitted when you reconnect to the network.

Is this true?

If so, why am I continually missing SMS messages? I was off the Vodacom network last week. When I turned my phone on, I received none of the messages that I should have received. People asked me, this morning, whether I had received their messages, so I know they were sent - and they numbered more than one!

BTW: why is there no cellphone forum, only cellular broadband?

I have also lost quite a few SMS messages in the last couple of months ... not to mention the huge amount of "crossed line" calls I receive. The caller will read the number he dialled back to me ... not even close to ANY of my existing phone numbers. I also seem to get SMS messages not intended for me ... was invited again the other day to a slumber party by a Cindy :D Hmm, maybe I should have responded :p

I've been experiencing the same thing; RE: SMS's not coming to my phone.

My phone is never off, as a matter of fact, my phone is attached to me like a glove and some people are getting irratated because they say they SMS me, but I don't get the SMS's, or I get 1, then another, miss one or 2, then get one.

I'm on Vodacom. :(

You get an invite to a slumber party and you IGNORE it?:)

I use a large number of handsets and have found this to be very much handset specific (not to say there are not other causes).

My HTC TyTN is the worst for not receiving calls, MMS's or SMS's, best is a non-Smartphone (I tend to use Nokia).

What handsets do you guys use?

If it's the handset, surely they wouldn't pass your network approval phase?

Probably a bit of both (or rather a compatibility issue between the two), but all my testing have been on one network (shock, horror :)) and I found quite a variance on how the handsets perform.

Can't say I notice it with my TyTn, but I do notice that I cannot rely on SMS when I am roaming (on MTN) in Europe. I am constantly switching automatically between networks, esp when I travel. On the road from , say, london to Oxford I get 'welcome to O2/welcome to Orange/Vodafone/o2 again".
It seems to me that if a message comes in on one netwrork it will not come to me on another, and will be gone by the time I get back on to the original one

I've noticed this with my HTC Wizard - if I send a 'please call me', the recipient gets 6 notifications (and would probably get more, if the limit wasn't 6 per day). It works fine on other handsets, and this handset works fine with other USSD commands, so I think it's just something odd with the combination of the two.

WRT Slumber party - My wife will skin me alive.

I have to agree, my HTC TyTN is the worst ... borderline a piece of crap compared to my N95 ... I do miss some on my N95 (so does my wife), but not as bad as with the TyTN

The "crossed line" calls are on any device, irrespective of age/make. I have 3 old data lines (from the early nineties) that are still active, and acts as a voice line if the incoming call is from a voice call. Then I have my actual number and a twincall number ... but I still get calls from people making a call to a number WAY off from my actual number/digits.

imagine the potential consequences of this sms failure - a hot girl that you've been spending time with sends you a sms asking you out. you reply but since she doesn't get the msg, she figures ur not interested. there goes ur hope of landing up with a hot chick! bummer! :D
wonder if one could sue the networks or handset manufacturers lol. i'm sure there's some story about this somewhere in the states :D

PS: in the real world, girl's don't ask guys out. just being hypothetical.

I see the forum. Thanks.

I'm using a Samsung D500 on Vodacom. It's a Samsung, so it sucks by default.

A lot depends on the settings of the senders handset!

If they have sent a message set to be valid for only 24 hours, unless you are on network within <24 hours the message self deletes!

Various networks use different patterns for delivering message, if I recall Orange UK try a first attempt immediately then again in ten minutes if not delivered, then in and hour and I think it then jumps to something silly like 12 hours or so! Orange UK also use 1800 MHz instead of 900 MHz and this can often result in poor signal reception in building, thus the message gets held up.
