Snapdragon 600 based Samsung Galaxy S4 is twice as fast as Galaxy S III and iPhone 5, easily beats HTC One too

Yesterday we got some potentially bad news for Europe – that the Galaxy S4 version in sold in Sweden will use the Snapdragon 600 chipset instead of the Exynos 5 Octa that geeks were hoping for. The same version will be sold in North America. However, then we saw some reassuring benchmarks and now we can add one more.

Primate Labs, makers of the Geekbench app took interest in the Samsung Galaxy S4 performance and made a chart to see how the new Galaxy flagship performs. Using data from a benchmark run by Android Authority, the Primate Labs chart shows that the S4 is over twice as fast as its predecessor.

It also beats the HTC One, which uses the same chipset though at a lower clockspeed (1.7GHz for the HTC, 1.9GHz for the Samsung). As for competition from other platforms, the Apple iPhone 5 scores almost the same as the BlackBerry Z10, both with about half the score of the Galaxy S4.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 used for the benchmark is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, meaning it uses slightly updated Krait 300 cores compared to the BlackBerry Z10 and the LG Nexus 4. Also note that the Galaxy S4 used for the benchmark has not been running finalized software.

As Primate Labs points out, the iPhone 5 will be updated soon and the iPhone 5S will improve performance and we’ll have to wait and see how it stacks up. But the Z10 is it for BlackBerry, their other model coming this year, the Q10, uses a lower-end chipset.

Shame that we don’t have a score for the Galaxy S4 version with an Exynos 5 Octa – the Cortex-A15 cores are supposed to blow the Kraits out of the water, battery willing.

how is this bad news? Cyanogenmod won't release for the S4 since Samsung doesn't release the full source code for Exynos as opposed to Snapdragon that do. So for rooting I would think the latter is preferred.

OT - what does this mean for the average user? What would they be doing (or need to do) to get any benefit from this?

I think the Exynos 5 is the 'universal' version........ subject to correction?

Also read that, Exynos will be used for international version and Snapdragon for US because it has all the LTE radios for all the carriers.

You are not alone in that train of thought, I'm sure I read something similar the other day. But I did read that a lot of the developers are rather tired of Samsung, and prefer the Qualcomm way of doing things in the very same Google+ post.

I've seen the benchmarks and that Snapdragon just screams. Mighty impressive processor.

Supposedly the Exynos (GT-i9500) radio only does LTE band 5 (850), so not usable on any current SA LTE networks. We require VC/MTN = band 3 (1800), CC = band 1 (2100) & 8ta = band 40 (2300).

Wonder if the SA networks will then bring in Snapdragon versions (GT-i9505)?

I will not be buying another Exynos equipped phone. I like running AOSP Roms and Samsung has given the modding community a fat FU by refusing to release source code for their processors... Snapdragon sounds mighty fine to me

Do we have anything that uses the full power of the S3 to warrant throwing a party about all this power in the S4?

I want 8 cores :(
I'd rather have the decent indie developer support & working LTE of the Snapdragon.

BTW The Exynos doesn't really have 8 cores, its more like 4+4, only 4 are active at a time.

It looks to be very powerful 4 cores but yeah you may as well just use a quad with decent power stepping.

You be able to angry birds better...

The potential for next generational apps is there and shouldn't be discounted. Current apps that don't quite seem to fulfill their promise like Siri are CPU limited; that stuff is very computationally intensive. 3d gaming, persistent intelligent data, modeling, lifestyle health tracking etc, Google Now, realtime traffic mapping, all needs greater CPU power.

Don't forget that most flagships are all going the 1080p route with screens and you need some serious horsepower to push all those pixels. Still can't believe they've shrunk my 46" TV to 5" :wtf:

I wish big name devs would start getting into phones but I suppose the issue now is battery life. It's a huge open market though, Nvidia seems to be slowing moving into mobile gaming with the Shield and then there's Samsungs docking station thingy, wouldn't be surpised if Google released something similar for the next Nexus...

Just had a thought, maybe Samsung should allow the S4 to dock onto their TV's, then you can video call etc etc all hands free! I should patent that!
