Snatch gang claims the hack of the Department of Defence South Africa and added the military organization to its leak site.

Interview with the hackers who broke into South Africa's Department of Defence

The attackers who claimed responsibility for breaching the South African Department of Defence and exfiltrating terabytes of data have told MyBroadband they still have access to the network.

We contacted the group via instant message, and they provided a statement in response to our questions about the breach.

They should leave those holes open so that the citizens can take care of its government problem....
The citizens clearly don't want to. In actual fact, the citizens have encouraged this.

Are you surprised by any of this information? Did you think the (people that make up the) government of South Africa capable of being more than themselves?

South Africa is where it is, because the man in the street is either too lazy, stupid or busy to help change it.

“It was pointless. People are so far away from cyber security that many of them did not even believe that there was any secret information on their servers.”

Snatch said they struggled to make people understand what was at stake.
Good gravy. And "what is a server?".

“Afterwards, we have forgotten about the company for a few months — to remember about it in the summer of 2023.”
Maybe its just a language thing, but this part just doesn't feel right to me. How do you "forget" breaching a country's department of defense?

Downloading TERABYTES takes a little while, you know?
I guess its a matter of semantics. In my mind the attack is still ongoing if they are downloading data (admittedly my mind is a strange place sometimes).

To be fair they are going to vote harder next time.

“To put it simply, a lot of people didn’t even understand the word server, asking whether their laptop was hacked. Oh, my laptop is safe? Ok, that’s fine, bye.”

Probably thought it was something to do about serving the country.

Does anybody know if this is true?

Snatch gang claims the hack of the Department of Defence South Africa and added the military organization to its leak site.

The Snatch ransomware group added the Department of Defence South Africa to its data leak site.

The mission of the Department of Defence is to provide, manage, prepare and employ defence capabilities commensurate with the needs of South Africa, as regulated by the Constitution, national legislation, parliamentary and executive direction.

The group claims to have stolen Military contracts, internal call signs and personal data, for a total of 1.6 TB of data. If the attack will be confirmed the disclosure of confidential information pose a serious risk to organizations involved in the contracts.

Screw DOD and hack the DOJ let's see how many judges need the rope and tree.

Huh?
I have worked in governments IT trenches... no not surprised. But I think you have a limited definition of citizen that I was not aware of when writing my post.

I think maybe you went overboard with the generalizations ‍♂️
