So, how is Ubuntu 10.10, a.k.a. Maverick Meerkat?

I would love to know what you guys think of Ubuntu 10.10! Your thoughts?

*Think my download screwed up, burned the ISO to CD, but it just won't boot & giving me errors. Oh well, will try again later.

You sure you didn't download a copy of Vista? :)

LOL....no, it was Ubuntu 10.10 iso. Who in their right mind would want to download a copy of Vista?

But I'm very curious if it's any good. Will get a copy from work tomorrow.

I've been using it on my notebook for about 3 months and it has better support for the hardware than Windows 7. :p Its been rock solid for me - better than the LTS release even.

Loading up at the moment - the revamped partitioning tool still lacks a "Use existing Linux Partitions" option as found in Fedora :(

Had it on my Netbook for a couple of days and love it. Worked 100% out of the box. Using my Netbook now for the first time in months.

Been working on 10.04 for awhile now. Had endless issues with audio out of the box.. QuakeLive audio is messed up and never seemed to work. Was unable to play multiple audio streams at the same time. Followed endless guides on how to fix it and non ever did.. Updated to 10.10 last week and it seemed to fix about 80% of the audio issues.. Its still not 100% like it should be but its nice looking, fast and rock solid. Just wish the audio issues could be sorted out..

Smooth install on a desktop Celeron D 3.4GHz, 1Gb dual boot Win XP system with the exception of the partition tool I previously mentioned.

I Like: installed Ralink RT2561 Wireless card with no problems for once, Network Manager is more intuitive. Boot time to usable desktop including password entry - 25 secs. All the stuff I expect to see installed from a Live CD was there. No problems accessing the windows partition or office network.

Dislike: vi is still stuffed (has been for a while on Ubuntu) so you have to install vim. I'm using vim on Fedora and Centos as well now but remembering to type that extra m is quite a learning curve :D

Pulseaudio still has problems with TV cards but this isn't limited to Ubuntu.

Overall: Very polished.

You know your OS sucks when people wont even pirate it.

Moved from 10.04 and it seems more polished. The text was always prettier on Ubuntu but using it now its gorgeous. No technical issues so I can't comment on any problems. Gotta love "working out of the box". Personally I think they have made huge strides since 9.04... had tons of probs back then.

Finished my install. Just installing vlc and stuff. Guys....I have fallen into a depression! You will not believe what I did. I forgot to backup my music folder to my ext HDD. IT IS ALL GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got this felling like someone punched me in my stomach as I clicked "install" but could not figure out why. As I went for a smoke while it was installing, it hit! It is the worst feeling!!!!!

Maybe all isn't gone yet. Just use a recover application. I only know of Recuva (that is free and good) for Windows, but there should be one for Linux also.

Dont you have a backup of your music folder on an external hard drive?

What I did is create my own partition for "/home" so when I do a new install I have all my data & config files on my drive

Yep, having a separate /home partition should be part of all default installation documentation, guides, sites, etc.

I'm a total noob at this so pls bear with me. I installed 10.04 (I think) last night and then it sucked down 300+ updates from the interwebs. So far, so good.
Now if I want to be up and running on the latest and greatest version (10.10 yes?) do I need to download the iso and do a complete install or does 10.04 upgrade itself to 10.10 via updates?

Make sure your 10.04 is fully updated, then run sudo update-manager -d from a terminal. In the new window that comes up, you will see a Distro update is available. Did mine yesterday and it worked great.

This is the simplest way, although it does download quite a large amount in the process. I prefer to update my current install, download the "Alternate CD", burn that and then do the distro update from the CD. This saves one from re-downloading if the upgrade process is interrupted
