So, how is Ubuntu 10.10, a.k.a. Maverick Meerkat?

Finished my install. Just installing vlc and stuff. Guys....I have fallen into a depression! You will not believe what I did. I forgot to backup my music folder to my ext HDD. IT IS ALL GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got this felling like someone punched me in my stomach as I clicked "install" but could not figure out why. As I went for a smoke while it was installing, it hit! It is the worst feeling!!!!!

:-(

Try Testdisk/Photorec, if the area the files were in were not overwritten during the install then the files should still be there. A format of the drive/partition does not actually erase the data, just the "index" to the data.

Really makes sense to have a separate /home partition.

Ah thanks ponder! Will give it a try tonight. Where do I get that software? Is it in the software centre? If it works I will give you a big kiss! I swear...i nearly burst into tears when I realized what I have done! :-(

It's in the software centre or synaptic, just search for 'testdisk' which will install both testdisk & photorec.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DataRecovery#Photorec

Ideally you should not install any more software on that partition/drive. testdisk is pretty small though if you want to increase the risk.
When you recover the files NEVER recover them to the same partition/drive, ALWAYS recover to a different drive/partition. You don't want to overwrite the areas with the lost files as you would then never be able to get them off.

If you have a windows installation you could also try using R-Studio if your linux partition/drive is formatted as ext2/3/4. Never tried it before on a linux drive though so cant vouch for it but it works well on fat/ntfs. Same recovery rules apply, recover to different partion/drive. PM if you need rstudio.

The kiss you can keep unless you got a hot sister to deliver it :D

Thanks Ponder Wonder. I will install it tonight and see. I have not done much on the new install yet except installing VLC and codecs. I really hope my music is still lurking somewhere. I take testdisk is a GUI based thing and not command line? I cant do command line for sh*t lol. I will recover to my external hard drive then....I dont have a second partition on my HDD.

I do have a very hot sister even if I say so myself....but she is not available. Ill give the kiss and you can just pretend its her. I will give you a pic of her to help the imagining lol.

Make sure your 10.04 is fully updated, then run sudo update-manager -d from a terminal. In the new window that comes up, you will see a Distro update is available. Did mine yesterday and it worked great.

This is the simplest way, although it does download quite a large amount in the process. I prefer to update my current install, download the "Alternate CD", burn that and then do the distro update from the CD. This saves one from re-downloading if the upgrade process is interrupted

Yip, that confirms it. I am an uber-noob
Thanks for the advice guys. It makes sense.
Seeing as my 10.04 install is literally a couple of hours old, I'm leaning towards just downloading 10.10 and doing a fresh install.

It runs in terminal but is menu driven so easy to use. See http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec_Step_By_Step for screen shots on how it's done.
Else try R-Studio first as you can view the disk folder/directory structure and only mark specific folders etc.

Pics on MyBB? That's must be why it looks like it's gonna snow outside :p

Am I the only one experiencing a stability decrease with every version of Ubuntu? 9.04 worked perfectly from the LiveCD and installed on an external drive. 9.10 was a bit slower, especially the graphics (that's GMA950 for you...), but was still usable. 10.04 had to be forced to start using the acpi=ht flag. Now the LiveCD of 10.10 won't even reach the screen where you select whether to try or install, with ACPI disabled.

It's not the installation disc, since it works perfectly on my brother's PC.

Nope....I have not noticed. I even helped a friend of mine install it on his k@kka old laptop yesterday and he is loving it. The only probs we had was we had to connect the laptop on the lan so it could search for his old Broadcom WiFi driver and Nvidia drivers....once that was done it worked like a bomb.

He has never used Linux before...only Windoze and he seems to be loving it. I am so proud of myself :)

PonderWonder......it is actually working!!!!!!!!!! It is so COOL! I feel like a data specialist in the Las Vegas CSI lab snooping on a crim's computer for incriminating evidence and retrieving his devious files!

"And tonight on CSI Las Vegas.....OC tracks down a serial killer by retrieving what was once thought to be information lost forever on a hard drive!" *que theme music....doo hoo hoo..do do...do do LOL

I will report back and tell you if it was successfull. It is now finalizing phase 2. Takes a long time and my poor little processor and fan is going bannanas with the retrieval...BUT ITS WORTH IT!!!! Thanks so much Ponder! PONDER FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!!

For me 10.10 is the champion because it supports HDMI sound, the others never worked quite right for this... As we speak it is replacing Win7 on my HTPC.

Great! Remember you can use the same method for other file systems as well in future but rather make backups :p

I installed 10.04 recently on both my work's laptop and my home netbook.

Zero issues so far. Everything works perfectly.

I had to use my Huawei E220 dongle today, plugged it in and it worked straightaway, no fiddling with .conf files or downloading bits and bobs here and there....

I'm totally off Windows now. It can die a sad and lonely death :D

WindowsNT is dead.

Welcome to the post-NT era

Credit where credits due... linux has come a LOOOONG way. The moment they get a steam client and there is only command line jiggery pokery for the guys who want it, it's going to explode.

I moved my neighbors over to 10.10 and they commented that it actually is easier than windows. These people are about as lowest common denominator as it gets so well done Canonical.
