So, how is Ubuntu 10.10, a.k.a. Maverick Meerkat?

Libs, what is happening? You're in an absolute state of euphoria. :D

Can you blame him? He has discovered Linux. He is still on a Linux high. He will calm down eventually lol

Ubuntu 10.10 unstable piece of sh#t

Hey, don't scare me now. I've unsuccessfully tried to download 10.10 since Sunday, so my brother-in-law will bring me a copy tomorrow.

I'm on 10.04 LTS and wondering if I should upgrade. It runs very nicely on my Asus F5R notebook, except for the suspend mode that still gives me a blank screen. Still looking for a fix.

Yeah, I don't want to burst his bubble now. :p

He will eventually find out the world is big enough for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

Quick example....the sound with any movie on Windows 7 with the Dolby Digital Plus decoder is far superior to anything Linux has to offer, so I prefer to watch my movies on Windows 7, but I'm more than happy to listen to music on Ubuntu with headphones during the day. It's good enough.

I'm just glad that everything is coming together at last :D

now I can chuck Windows away for good and not worry about connectivity.

There might still be a place for Windows, but it is going to be tough going in the months ahead.

Stuxnet will be a bigger menace than realized.

Trust me....me have learned my lesson!

Hugzies. :)

I also want a hug :), I told you in post 14 that you must use a recover tool. But thanks to Ponder I also learned something new... i.e. which apps work for linux.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but the sound Windows 7 will give you and the sound Ubuntu will give you for watching a Dolby Digital movie will be so near each other that only a bias toward Windows 7 is better, will create a placebo effect that will make it sound better. To me personally sound from Ubuntu sounds more crisp (not just me: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1515144) than from Windows 7 with the correct driver. Dolby Digital gets decoded by an encoder that supports AC3 audio with Dolby Digital or DTS, which you get with VLC on both Windows and Linux. Only when you use a non-free DVD playback application like PowerDVD will it decode the sound and add artificial effects to the audio to make it sound better or with a free decoder like AC3 filter. The same can be achieved on Ubuntu. If, however, you have a sound card that supports hardware decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS, well then thats another story on its own.

I wonder how your sound would be if you installed a vanilla copy of Windows 7 and then watched a movie without installing audio drivers. So, as you can see on a vanilla install, Ubuntu/Linux undeniably kicks ass with the audio quality it produces without the need for additional audio drivers.

Both Windows and Ubuntu have flaws and advantages. But don't think that Windows was always first with their innovations, many features from past Ubuntu releases have just been added to Windows 7, especially with the file explorers. Windows 8 will most probably have the ability to make tabs in Windows Explorer, which Nautilus had for a long time already.

You must have a slow internet connection, Live CD install takes about 20 mins & downloads 14Mb from the local server (if you selected a SA location).

Upgraded my 10.04 to 10.10 using the AlternateCD (which I've done since 8.10) and it's working *exactly* as 10.04 has :)

The bottom line for me: everything still works. I'm very impressed as usual

I know this part, this is where you have to insert your Windows 7 disk!

Yeah - and I hate to think how long Windows Update would take on a fresh Windows 7 install to get it up to date on his Axxess Uncapped.

BTW I did this weeks Win 7 security updates yesterday - 57Mb and I don't use Office!

Loving Maverick! For those who want to prettify the Ubuntu experience a bit, check out this link.

Adds a new icon set, global menu bar (A La Mac), Docky and some Compiz goodness.

Normal internet isn't that slow though? And Windows Updates always downloaded at full line speed. It's just these Ubuntu Updates that are so slow....

Edit....See I was downloading from a UK server.....Fixed now...Should be faster....

The moment they get a steam client...

And port all the games then really see no use for any other OS. Only time will tell. The command line is ver powerful and once you get the hang of it you will reckon it's the dogs bollocks. Hell, even MS started with their powershell recently.

Linux has so many cool apps it's unreal and they are very powerful. The thing is you have to change your frame off mind else you are fscked. Linux is not windows and it's not trying to be it either. I started using linux in about '94 and I'm not saying it was easy in the beginning but once you shift you mindset you become aware of how much easier it is to use than windows. I still use windows but at times I feel severely restricted by what the OS allows me to do. So where before I used to look for windows based solutions & pirate software to do a specific job I have found better free linux alternatives. Like K3B is the best burning application ever and the cool thing is you have direct access to the developer via the developer mailing list and these guys are usually very keen for your feedback. I got lightscribe incorporate into K3B by simply speaking to the dev., he protested that the solution was not gpl but he could still call a routine from Lacie to emboss the disk. I've also had numerous encounters with developers of other projects and they are always keen for feedback and suggestions. I put this down to ownership & pride in what they do, the whole community is also there to validate their code and make suggestions which is fscking cool if you don't have an ego complex.. The best response I've had from MS to date is "By design" so they don't acknowledge a fault for a severe lack of features.

I know this part, this is where you have to insert your Windows 7 disk!

And spend way more money on bandwidth. Been there 4 days ago.
