Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10....Shouldnt have...

Seems there are some bugs if you have an ATI graphics card and a conflict betwen fglrx and xorg...So today I will try solve that.

I share your pain with Ati graphics, cos my notebook has the "dreaded" Ati Express X1100 chipset. It runs ok in Ubuntu 10.04, but as soon as I switch to "extra" special desktop effects, the tearing starts. Just looks horrible. :(

Cmon Oc we are all part of a family here in Ubuntu land. Lets hope they sort this problem out. But yes if you are going Ubuntu, Nvidia is the way to go.

On another note my HTPC is running like greased lightning, sound, shares, everything works lekker. Including max Compiz effects it's running on 270MB ram... starting to think 2GB was overkill but on win 7 it was the min.

Starting to think my swap area was a waste, was partitioned with 6GB swap and I doubt it will ever get used.

OC, I agree with Shayd, you're making a painful situation just more....painful.

I bought a nVidia graphics card for my desktop, not gonna make the same mistake twice.

Downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 desktop last night, installed it on a spare machine.

First time I have ever seriously delved into linux, nice but very confusing, I suppose it takes a couple weeks to get used to.

Unfortunately many of our accounting packages like Pastel only run on Windows, so that sucks.
It has the same boot time as Windows 7 on an equally hardware matched machine.

Can you download themes to make it look like windows 7 in terms of feel and look?

VirtualBox is the solution, doing that for my wife as I refuse to let her run Windows now that we are installing public wifi access for her clients in the next month.

Install KDE if you like the eye-candy

Virtualbox allows you to run an OS inside your OS. Its great for applications that do not need 3D accelerated graphics (support is still limited).

For my wifes business I'm installing XP with SP3 in Virtualbox for her Pastel. Its great as you can even "blend" it into your desktop if you often need to access the guest OS.

I use VirtualBox for my UNISA studies and one of the great things about it is taking snapshots of the image. This allows you to rollback or make multiple copies. Great if someone wants to play around in the one OS without screwing up the other instance.

Look it at and have fun :)

Vitualbox's seamless mode is cool, looks like the apps are running as a normal window in Linux. VB can also run in Headless mode.

The there's also WINE if your apps are compatible.

One thing I'm loving about linux besides the free factor is the amount of stuff out there, MASSIVE.

Just setup my email and facebook stuff - now just need to join our domain?
