So, how is Ubuntu 10.10, a.k.a. Maverick Meerkat?

Or a clean install?

There are so many versions out there it's hard to tell anymore - for someone getting into linux it's a mission, you get absolutely slated on certain forums for asking why you would want linux to look like windows etc.

When all you are trying to do is switch over as easily as possible.

Mint is not a distro I use so I only just spotted it was the Mint 10 Release Candidate that became available on the ?18th? that's why it's not on the local mirrors. Probably better to try stable Mint 9 ATM.

Making linux 'look' like windows does not make it 'behave' like windows. It's a superficial change, don't be fooled. If you are not willing to change/adapt then I'm sorry to say Linux is not for you, you will be better off sticking with Windows.

Linux Mint is only in RC stage now which is not an official stable release, so you won't find it on mirror servers.

what's the difference between Ubuntu and linuxmint - I'm not enjoying ubuntu too much but am keen to get into linux, should I try linuxmint?

Mint is based on Ubuntu, but is easier to get into for beginners and it does have everything you could possibly need installed by default (codecs etc.)

Personally I'm about to change from Mint back to Ubuntu cos there's certain features on Maverick that I want (mainly related to Ubuntu One)

I think you're better off with Ubuntu than with Linux Mint.

The support forum for Ubuntu is massive, it's THE most popular distrubution (distro) of Linux in the world - and it was started by a South African. :)

Agree with ponder, Linux is not Ubuntu, it's a different OS, different file system, different way of doing things....but Ubuntu really tries hard to make the transition as smooth and painless as possible.

I suggest that you first run it on a desktop/notebook at home, before trying to link up with the office network.

Good luck!

I dove back into Linux with 10.04 after an almost decade-long hiatus and I'm so glad I did! There might still be a few out-of-the-box annoyances, but I can at least actually use my lappie again... Press power button, wait 30 or so seconds, do whateverthehell I want to do.

Today I figured I best boot up Vista again, just to update the AV and check for updates and whatnot... what a bloody frustration! The damn thing sits there whirring away for what must be 5 minutes, loading bloat, before it becomes even remotely usable. For the next couple of minutes *double-click* and you get that infuriating Windows circle, notifying you that Windows is aware that you want to start Firefox but it needs to carefully consider the request first. Sod off I say, Ubuntu FTW!

I must admit Ubuntu is much faster - I have a dual boot between 7 and ubunutu and ubunutu is faster at everything except network stuff.

Win 7 starts and that stupid circle goes on and on - good excuse to go get coffee.

I have Win 7 on another machine with very little installed and it runs about the same as ubuntu.

Tell me - there more programs you install on ubuntu, will it also become "bloated" like windows does?

That's a loaded question, in MY experience of usable desktop linux (predominately Fedora since FC3) linux has always out performed Windows on the same system by a fair margin.

I am comparing to Win XP and 7 Professional versions (skipped Vista as I already had a dog :D) both of which run on dual boot systems in the office. Win 7 is a huge step forward but still likes "sulking" occasionally for no apparent reason.

Ah, you're referring to the "mysterious" hard disk activity in Windows 7! :p

There are lots of discussions about this, most people reckon you should just accept it as a new "feature" of Windows 7. :wtf:

As far as I know....no it wont....and I have not noticed this at all with Ubuntu. My install remains fast as the first day that I install it no matter what I install into it. Its COOL! And no more disc defragging no more!!!! YAY!

Not to be pedantic, but I use Linux Mint, and whenever I had a problem I just referred to the Ubuntu forums, Mint, at it's core is Ubuntu with just a bit of cosmetic surgery and add-ons. That sorted me out every time. I haven't had a Mint specific problem as yet.

I see the Ubuntu devs picked that up....now if you install 10.10, you've got the option to download drivers + codecs when you install. So, after install, you can watch movies and listen to mp3s right away. Sorted.

Ubuntu has come a long way on that. I reinstalled 4 machines the last few weeks with 10.10 and its amazing how much quicker and easier it is to get a virgin install going with all the required codecs, apps, etc

I must say that I'm starting to use the Software Center now - it makes it so much easier to find new apps.
