So, how is Ubuntu 10.10, a.k.a. Maverick Meerkat?

I just finished upgrading the wife's and daughter's PCs to 10.10 and honestly I cannot really see a difference.

That being said, the only time I take Ubuntu for a drive is the wife needs something done that she herself cannot do so my opinion is /dev/null

Just be honest....secretly you love working on Ubuntu. :p

I've compared Ubuntu 10.10 with Windows 7 & a leetle bit....with the Intel Matrix Storage (AHCI driver) driver for Windows 7, I get 150MB/s transfers, while I get 110MB/s in Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. Not a deal breaker, but very interesting.

So far, It's been very nice. Apart from the boot time actually taking longer, and the Laptop standby problems many people report with the new kernel, but other than that. It's been very pleasurable.

Hi there. Who can send me a copy of 10.10? I Conical doesn't want to send me another one cause they already have back in 2008. Downloading one isn't an option for me. Freedom Toasters (wonder if any still are functioning) that I can get to doesn't exist anymore.

If downloading isn't an option,*how do you keep your installation up to date? The new updates for 10.10 clock in at over 100Mb if I'm not mistaken?

I don't...didn't for 9.04 anyway :D . Figured its Linux so security wise I should be fine. And as for updates, I think I did an update once, for a program, or a few security updates here and there which I could find in the overly long extensive upgrade list. Maybe the developers should look at bundeling the updates like Windows does (security update - critical, etc etc).

P.S. Looking at your signature, why do you like Gentoo over Ubuntu? I wanted to try Fedora 12 and Mint 8.0 (I think) and OpenSUSE uhm...forgot the version, when I got my Ubuntu 9.04, but non of the other Distro's worked properly with my Laptop, so went with Ubuntu. But always up for a better (read more to my needs/likes) distro especially if I can make it a bit lighter on resources (even XFCE but minus the WIndows 3.0 look)

Here is a discussion we had recently on why we prefer the more challenging distros:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...istributions-other-than-Ubuntu-and-Mint-exist.

If I'm not mistaken Ubuntu does categorize their updates, I'll have to look on the wifes PC to see how it is denoted but if memory serves me right they have "Security" and some others.
Code:
49 packages can be updated.
19 updates are security updates.

PM me your address, I'll post you 10.10.

I know that I'm a bit late to the party, but was running 10.04 and was quite happy so didn't want to upgrade immediately. Then, I got bored and decided I wanted to give Fedora 14 a go. 30 minutes later and Fedora was no more, I'm just too used to a Debian setup and everything felt very foreign. Popped in Ubuntu 10.10 disc and I'm not looking back.

It seriously does feel more responsive than 10.04, everything flows so smoothly almost as if I was working on a Mac :D

Anyway, thats my initial perception, now lets see if it holds up. Big thumbs up!

Open source software

Ubuntu is good but I find Mint more user friendly.

For me, one of the best advantages of Linux is being virus and spy-ware worry free!

So many end users have never heard of or tried open source software.

Mark S has done amazing work worldwide raising awareness of Linux & open source software.

The reason for that is most people learn what they experience at work. The new generation learn what they experienced on their parent PC or the PC their parents bought them, and their parents grew up with MS and the like. If you want to change that, I think anyway, is to get linux and opensource into businesses, it filters down from there. Just my thoughts on it...

I could never get used to Fedora - hated every second of using it. Just feels like a distro with no soul.
