Now I always thought if you bought a domain name with whoever you could do what you want with it. I paid Hetzner for a .com domain registration, now I want to use my domain for something else. However to be able to do anything with it I need to buy a hosting package with Hetnzer?

WTF

What are my options etc?

i think in their terms and conditions, they probably bought a domain name on your behalf. So maybe it allows them to stipulate that you can only host or make DNS entries for hosting with them? Sounds like a dodgy thing to do though.

That's a nasty one. Is it possible to have it moved to another company which allows one more freedom?

This often happens with new clients: they register a domain and then want to start using it for emails, building a website and so on... when I have to explain to them that they first need a hosting package before they can actually *do* anything with their domain.

I don' think that Hetzner have done anything "nasty" TBH, I think you're just a bit confused? (I mean that in the friendliest way possible)

ETA: what is the "something else" that you want to use your domain for???

I want to use it to point to either a blog service or another hosting company.

A domain name is purely a name, it's what gives the ip to a web address an easier form of identification. While there are some hosting companies who offer free domain names, they are by no means the same thing as a hosting package.

Sign up with this company, www.directnic.com pay $10 and move the domain away from hetzner, point it to these name servers NS1.TECHNICALLY.CO.ZA & NS2.TECHNICALLY.CO.ZA

Sign up for the cheapest hosting account on www.technically.co.za and PM the e-mail address you used and I will set the charge to R0.00 and you can point where you like from our Cpanel

I doubt that's legal. They can't force you to get a package, can they?

It is perfectly fine to buy a domain name from a host without web hosting, although it is recommended to buy from a registrar and keep the web hosting to the web host. If they make you purchase a hosting package before you can do anything, then that is not right at all.

I usually see Hetzner domain names registered in the owner's name so I don't think anything will be a problem (except relying on them to update it, accept the ticket etc that may cause potential delays). You don't need to use them as your web host, just inform them you wish for the domain name to be transferred to you or to your web host.

According to them:

"Kindly note that registration only account's does not have any DNS records assigned to them."

In other words I bought the domain name through them. However if I want to use it I must buy a hosting package with them. This is quite ridiclius and in that case I want to move it over to another company.

No, but remember co.za has a new system (new, as in a few months)

Before, if there were 3 emails, at least ONE YES had to be received.

Now, at least one YES and NO NO's.

So if he replies and says yes, Hetzner just needs to reply to their notice and say NO and Co.za wont allow the transfer. Sucks.

It just means that they have not got any DNS records, you will just need to specify the name servers of your web host in a domain name update for the domain name to have proper DNS records.

They usually accept the update in my experience.

What do I email them exactly, it seems unless I use the correct terminology they will be giving me more endless hours of grief.

You could tell them that there will be a domain name update occurring soon and that they must accept - they may need proof from you that you are who you say you are.

The web host will usually initiate the process on your behalf but you could also do it by using the tutorial located at http://co.za/intro/what.shtml and http://co.za/update/updateinfo.shtml
