So I bought a domain name with Hetzner now I need to pay more to use it?

What do I email them exactly, it seems unless I use the correct terminology they will be giving me more endless hours of grief.

Go to Afrihost :D and get a package from them, they will then update the dns records to point to your domain name, hetzner will *HAVE* to accept the update from Afri...

No, but remember co.za has a new system (new, as in a few months)

They usually accept the update in my experience.

The web host will usually initiate the process on your behalf but you could also do it by using the tutorial located at http://co.za/intro/what.shtml and http://co.za/update/updateinfo.shtml

It's a .com domain so none of this info is relevant. Ask them to update the domain's DNS. If they refuse, wait 60 days and move the domain away from them. (most registrars won't allow a domain to be transferred wihtin 60 days of registration.)

If it is a .com then you should have them change the NS entries otherwise transfer it to your web host. Thanks for clarifying it to be a .com, I see now he had it in the original post.

The "they usually accept the update in my experience." is valid and I don't see why it won't be for a .com domain name.

Hi Raven -- you need to read the thread from the beginning again. The advice given to Linoman was:

1. Ask Hetzner to update the DNS as you require (no-one else can)
2. If they refuse, wait 60 days and transfer the domain away from them

There is nothing else he can do.

Yup, but I don't see them not updating the records so long. Either way, Linoman tell us what they say and how it turns out.

It sounds fairly dodgy and as far as I know hetzner isn't really a dodgy company.

For a site you need 3 things:
1) domain registration
2) dns hosting
3) web hosting

For your blog account you need 1+2 and the 3 is the blog service. .com domains generally have a "locking" type system in place whereas with co.za there's 3 emails sent out (registrant, administrative contact, technical contact) and it needs 1+ yes and 0 no's. .com's will require the host to actually unlock it for transfer where co.za just requires them not to say no.

Domains are generally paid for on a yearly basis. If you register through one of the registrars like registerfly they typically provide free DNS hosting as well but it's not included most of the time. co.za actually requires the DNS to be in place before the domain is registered. I'd suggest asking Hetzner if they will do DNS hosting for your domain, then you can just direct the A record to your blog site. DNS hosting would probably cost around R10/mo or so. There are free DNS hosts but in that case you would need to update the domains registration to transfer the DNS to them.

I'm rather sure that Lino is technical enough to understand the concept of DNS. Only issue that I see not mentioned here is that pointing a DNS to an IP is one thing, to get the host server to resolve the name to the correct host is another thing, unless of course your lucky enough to have a static IP to a single hosted site on a server.

Getting to the point, your looking at wanting to "park" your domain. This is tricky if you are not working with either your own servers or through one hosting company.

My advice from personal experience: Take the cheapest package they got and then just setup redirecting in the CPANEL. You can then use the hosted package for say email or online storage.

(Just wrote my COS2269 this morning, aka N+)

I see they do a R19pm package. Just put in a redirect meta tag in the index.html file. I do this on our servers when I want users to stop using old URLs to access my apps and I want to cause as little disruption as possible.

Oh I have never liked them too expensive. Chat to me if you need a domain next time.
