Tried to import - super expensive. You can't import in bulk (i.e. anything over 1kg) due to the quantity of alcohol in it. Eagerly awaiting visitors from the snow-country to bring gifts...

Will see if I can arrange something should somebody go over to the dark side... can't make promises though.

Not my proudest moment and the lead-up to it was the drive home last night from Bryanston towards Fourways on Main Rd with the intention of turning left into Witkoppen Rd. If you commute this area, you will know that filing into the turning lane for Witkoppen requires you on a busy day to file into the emergency lane 300-400 metres before Witkoppen. Last night traffic was busier than usual and I could not file in, nor would anyone give me a gap - so I proceeded straight and turned left into Witkoppen from the straight lane on Main.

Yes, according to AARTO I was at fault: "Failed to comply with the directions conveyed by a road traffic sign by not proceeding straight as indicated by the arrow"

The female JMPD officer saw it the same way and pulled four cars over. She started with the Merc, Beemer and Audi behind me and after a 1/2 minute discussion with each driver she let them go. My turn came and I was outright told "I am going to write you a fine for R1200 because you turned on a straight". I questioned the the actual violation and the fine but then was told, that she can make it easy or difficult for me.

I admitted that it was my fault and I expected to be let off with a verbal warning, since the other 3 cars behind me also did not get a fine. Then she just outright said "I made a deal with the others, and can do the same with you. How much can you afford?". So I put 200 bucks into my ID-book and got a friendly "thank you" and continued my commute home.

Not quite happy about this as friends had similar experiences, reported the cops and subsequently had a hell of a time with harassment from fellow JMPD staff. None of the corrupt officials ever got disciplined.

While others say "Damn, you could have gotten away for 100 bucks" and some say "You should have reported her" and others "The right thing would have been to accept the fine", I just felt, that why should I waste my time to fight against corrupt cops or contest an insanely high fine (she wanted to charge me R1200, whereas I argued that this would not be more than R500 bucks before the discount according to AARTO).

I guess the time has come where I have recalibrated my moral compass with our president. I guess if I run into the same situation again, I will push them to give me a fine and settle. I doubt it would be worthwhile reporting cops for asking for bribes as this would clearly go no-where. Any thoughts / suggestions?

Hope to never see you complaining about crime and corruption in this country since you've now admitted to being corrupt yourself.

Yes, if you are 2 weeks overdue beyond the 21 days, than you are 2 weeks overdue

Was just a joke - after all the other people brought it up after you had already said you were 2 weeks past the grace period ;)

A failed attempt at humour.

I once paid a R1500 fine when the traffic officer was clearly indicating he'd like a bribe.
Drove with him to the station and paid it, received the receipt, everything.
He was not happy, but I was in the wrong, and wel - **** him.

To my eternal shame I also paid a bribe to a cop near the same intersection - I gave him R40 and have regretted it ever since. It's obviously not the size of the bribe, but the fact that I perpetuated a crime, and encouraged that monkey to do the same to others. I swore thereafter to always accept the fine. Keeping your conscience clean is worth so much more than a stupid fine - which you probably won't even get once you ask them to issue the ticket to you. If you were in the wrong (in this case you admit you were), then just accept the fine with good grace, and move on with your life. Next time, do as the others advise and be courteous, don't put up an argument (that's exactly what they want). You'll just be trying to argue based on moral/rational grounds, when the one who stopped you is not at all interested in either the morality or the rationality of the situation.

Not sure why you didn't just take the fine and then ignore it or just go to the prosecutor, they always reduce them.

Had a similar experience, porky pulls me over says was speeding, going to issue a fine of R600 I think it was and gives me the long kfc stare and I blankly stared back..imagine some old western music for 2 minutes while he is doing the stare and I'm waiting, eventually he asks for licence and writes out a fine, but I really think he didn't really know how to write one out, it was difficult for him and he got numbers and address etc confused. anyhow tossed the fine, was about a year or so ago, checked online, no fines registered to my name.

Really you paid those ****s, tsk tsk.

I am going to pull the "medical parole" card (all guys will know, that having the man-flu, going to work and then being stuck in afternoon traffic is the trifecta of pure evil) - I could not see myself through her writing out the fine and then have to waste more time getting it reduced/squashed. Next time it happens, I will do the right thing - it's not like I can now go back and insist of getting a fine - or?
