Eish pity im waiting for the NZ boarders to open, i have 2 decent cars for 55k each but using them both at the moment...

Golf 1 bru ... low maintenance.. cheap parts... any mechanic can work on it ... put a rim drop it for the looks ... insure it and if it get stolen you get more then 40k out ... (year and extra's dependent)

I wouldn't wish a Golf 1 on my worst enemy. Golf 1 and a Tazz are relics of the past and people should really move on, they were very good cars for those days but life has moved on, so should we.

Webuycars had a surprisingly large amount of cars in the R30-R40k range last year when I was car shopping.

In that price range it is important to just get something that looks like it was taken care of and still runs. I would stay away form anything with mods. A racing steering wheel is a big caution sign already.

Btw. The explanation of how the accident happened sounds fishy. It was definitely your fault for not checking.

Hmmm. So I just did a few calculations, it would cost me R266 per trip to work, so R532 per day to go and come from work, I work 22 days a month. In total it would cost me R140 448 a year to Uber. I would rather but a car for that amount.

However we don’t know how much OP travels.

How long do you realistically think a R40k car will last if OP have to drive it 22 days a month? WHEN that transmission/gearbox/top fails on that POS, he'll be out of R40k and out of transport.

Forever. There's no expiration date on a car and depending on what he gets most major breakages can be fixed for around R10k or less. R10k buys a import motor.

There are cars for that price in good condition, but your are not going to get them from those dealer snakes. It will have to be a private buy.

I asked my local mechanic to let me know if he serviced a car in good condition and the owner want to sell. I also took it to Supa Quick for an inspection and a body shop I trust for an inspection.

Got a Hyundai Accent 2006 with something like 30 000 on the clock, basically 10 year old demo for around R55 000 or something.

But since then also saw some Getz, Tazz, Avio, Tiida going for cheaper.

If you can manage to add 10-15K somehow I'm sure you can get something nice.

Just be wise.

OP's budget for a whole car is R40k...

You make R10k repairs and "import motors" sound like daily, run of the mill expenses that OP will brush off and carry on with his motoring life as if nothing happened.

I understand it is 7am...so maybe some coffee and then back to real life?

Anyone who drives such a old car or especially buy such a old car where they are unsure of the condition should work on getting R10k savings for emergency repairs.

It is probably unlikely they'll need to replace the engine, if they buy something running, it's all the small things that normally get you and starts to add up.

My R49k car 9 years in my possession, also an Opel Corsa. The car is 16 yo, the engine has never been opened and I have driven it every day to work, clutch was replaced 5 years after I bought it, besides that nothing major and the car is over 250k kms.

So it will last as long as he takes care of it. A used car with some service history will not start falling apart the minute you drive of with it.

I was in this predicament a year ago. I looked for weeks. There are very few good vehicles at this price. But there really are a few. Old Picantos, Getz, Golfs, etc. Just do your homework. It must have FSH otherwise you’re gambling.

The car OP wrote off had an issue that he posted about and I think he repaired it before writing the car off, I don't understand why it should suddenly be an issue to continue maintaining this one the way he was doing for his previous car.

I hear you and agree...BUT the odds are against it.

DON'T. GET. A. GOLF.

Although I do sometimes miss mine. Lol.
They tried to steal it 4 or 5 times. Had to replace the handles a couple of times and bend the door back.

The one he wrote of had over 400k kms, I am sure he can deal with any used car. Just go simple, small capacity normally aspirated, nothing fancy and he will be fine, I get it that someone who is not into old and used cars would be sceptical, yes it's a risk, but it becomes a calculated risk if you are someone who knows how to hold a spanner and get your hands dirty.

I bought a 2008 Picanto for r40k with 180 000km. But it had full service history. It’s now has 250 000km. Normal maintenance but it’s been perfect otherwise.

I am of the view that a Golf or a Tazz are good cars, but please people, life must go on, the car he wrote off was a proper car, proper suspension, proper brakes, power steering, aircon and a fairly good noise and heat insulation.

Going from that to a Golf is taking thousands of steps backwards, yes it has fairly simple mechanics to work on but no, just no, whoever is in possession of a Golf or a Tazz must give it to a struggling family member, for free.

Unfortunately beggars can't be choosers. Will just need to get the best he can for the price and what is available.

They are good cars, but there too much nostalgia around it. They aren't that good that they justify the prices they go for currently.

The R30k golfs you will get are completely shít. The good ones are ridiculously expensive.
