After writing them some strongly worded e-mails they agreed that they would cover the excess but that it was a show of kindness or some such bollocks.

They deemed that as my vehicle was in motion and the other vehicle did not hit directly into the back of me, I was somehow partly to blame for the incident. They even allocated a percentage of the blame - can't remember exactly what it was.

This is what I've heard as well. Unless you are hit from behind, there's pretty much no such thing as being 100% innocent when it comes to accidents.
Without knowing the details, I assume that in your case you should have seen her, and given her a gap.

Hmmm. So I just did a few calculations, it would cost me R266 per trip to work, so R532 per day to go and come from work, I work 22 days a month. In total it would cost me R140 448 a year to Uber. I would rather but a car for that amount.

However we don’t know how much OP travels.
About 150km a day. So Uber/Taxify out of the question.

The car OP wrote off had an issue that he posted about and I think he repaired it before writing the car off, I don't understand why it should suddenly be an issue to continue maintaining this one the way he was doing for his previous car.
Yes the gearbox issue with the selector forks which I fixed myself for R600. Was an easy job. Was expected of a gearbox that had done over 400000km.

How long do you realistically think a R40k car will last if OP have to drive it 22 days a month? WHEN that transmission/gearbox/top fails on that POS, he'll be out of R40k and out of transport.

My 10 year old R50 000 Tata Indica is still going 5 years after I bought it. Not all old crappie cars fail in a year.

I've seen quite a few tata indicas in reasonable condition going for under 40k. Maybe consider that? Otherwise there's Mazda Midge/Sting, Mazda 121, Ford telestar, Opel corsa lite, VW Polo playa, Toyota conquest etc.

I’ve got a cheap daily which is nearing 400k (380k) on the clock. I drive this thing all over and at times even load up with materials when the Bakkie is unavailable. Got it with 170k and hasn’t skipped a beat since.
Besides service on time I’ve had to replace a radiator, radiator cap (a few times), battery, cv boot, fan switch and a few water hoses.
The shocks , brakes and tyres I would put under maintenance. This car still has plenty in her.

paid 45k for it when I bought it... still get offers of 45k for it today. However those are the nostalgic buyers. Realistically I would prob a have sold the car for around 30k if nobody made offers... but the offers are there so I’m getting most of my money back.

so plenty of good reliable cars to be found for 40k.

I have decided to cash in one of my policies and will get out R22k. So I will look for something for around R60K. Seems the options are a lot better at that price point.
oh good, now you can get a car and a scooter. way to go OP
