I would like to see the people that is suggesting "just uber" to live like that for a month. Once you have a car and your freedom to just jump in and go somewhere, just makes it 100 times more convenient.

I'll take a 15-20 year "old" car for R40k over ubering any day

Watching the auction right now. This just sold for R32k

This is a great option, if you are handy with a wrench and such... but you have to be aware that there is zero responsibility on the auction house in terms of the car.. its voetstoets entirely so the car could be a total lemon.. Its a risky venture when you are desperate for a car and short on cash.

I've seen people pick up "steals" in terms of things like a Golf 7 GTi for minimal money, and then have to sink in pretty much the difference between what they paid and retail just to get the thing running properly.

All depends on the distances travelled. Many of my colleagues did the Uber thing quite successfully for a good long while. It was cheaper for them to Uber to and from work every day and Uber around the place for entertainment.

BUT it is predicated on them living close to work, and the entertainment they're interested in being close to where they stay as well.

True, everyone's circumstances differ but I do think if ubering was a possibility for OP, he would indicate it. Personally I stay about 2-3km from work but still won't considering ubering as you said my social/entertainment life doesn't allow me to like you said

100%... also given the way he explained his circumstances financially I immediately discounted it as an option in my head. Having a cheap reliable vehicle is way more valuable to him at this point.
