So I just got to my car and noticed that I have a pink ticket on my windscreen..
It is for my motor license which expired on 31-01-2015. The thing is, I already renewed my license back in January but I completely forgot to cut it out and stick it to my windshield.

Can I get out of the fine? What are my options? Surely they can see when I renewed my license when pulling up my details

Read the fine: Failed to display valid vehicle registration or something like that. The fine is for not displaying it, renewed or not.

A judge might reduce the amount, but get away with it. Nope.

Yup, agreed.

Back when every R100 was a lot of money to me I used to write letters to the municipal prosecutor about things like this, and had some successes with fines being halved. These days, I just consider it school fees.

See it as school fees. At least you wont be so lazy in the future? I've learned lessons like these before.

Go see the prosecutor for municipal area in which you got the fine. Explain your situation civilly (throw in what a good driver and citizen your are) and you may get your fine waived or halved, depending on your presentation and the prosecutors mood. Good luck.

Wait for summons.

I've similar experience. I got fined for not renewed. Actually my dad did renew my car disc but never remind me to collect. then went to police station with proof of renew certificate and they drop fine to R100.

You'll find that there is one fine issued for an expired disk then an alternate charge of failing to display the disk. So either way they have you. However you can consider writing to them with proof that your disk was purchased and you simply forgot to stick it on. This has worked for me in the past, so worth a try.

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I was on a training course in a busy area and I had forgotten to put my new license disc in my car.
I received a fine the one day, and then another one the next day.
I waited for the summons, but it never came.

I like to think they checked on the system and saw it had already been renewed.

Ok cool. I'll just leave it and see what happens

Not so cool, just do the right thing, and take the fine and proof of your licence to the nearest friendly police station - explain to them why it wasn't on, and see what they want you to pay - speak nicely and they will probably reduce it.

I am just so tired of everyone wanting to get out of fines in this bloody country.

If you get a fine for a law that you have broken, have the balls to man up and pay it!

Rant over!

There should be a court date on the pink ticket. So I don't think they need to issue any sumons. Here are your options.

1.Write a letter explaining the situation and send it to the address as specified on the ticket. Phone and confirm receipt of the letter and phone and pester them for a response.

2.Go to the traffic department in person and state your case. Get it sorted and pay a reduced fine imediately.

3.Go to the traffic court and go and speak to the prosecutor. Pay reduced fine imediately.

4.Go on court day and argue your case. Can even go on different day before the date, but then you have to go to the traffic court before to add your case to the different day's list of cases. Traffic cop probably won't be there and it could easily be thrown out. If going this route a good method is to send the traffic department a letter stating that you intend to try your case on such and such a date and get them to sign for it. Then when you go to court on the day and the state doesn't have its cop there and you have the signed letter of receipt, it will get thrown out. Works well for drunk n driving cases.(2nd hand info)

5.Just pay the fine.

6.Don't pay the fine. Will go to warrant of arrest stage in which case it will be fun times if you are stopped at a road block where they are electronically checking number plates/licenses.

The fine is usually failure to display. Having paid licence fees, but to lazy to put it up isn't an excuse.

Pathetic. I went to the trafic department this week, picked up a new drivers license, renewed my one car that expires next month and registered my paid off car on my name. Took 2 hours but if you do it in advance and put the blooming disc in the disc holder you are sorted.

Come one, 2 hours of my time is probably worth more than your education but I still make an effort and do it.
