So much for America's Religious Right

Ok, so following the same reasoning that the actions of one man (Haggard) is indicative of the actions of all members in a group (America's religious right), we can then also say that everyone in the ANC is corrupt and thinks a shower will cure AIDS based on the actions of one man (Zuma)?

Somehow I don't think this type of reasoning holds water........

The original title of this story was "Powerful pastor's drug purchases shocks evangelicals", indicating that the so-called "religious right" was shocked by his actions. Or is it the fact that they were shocked by his actions that were wrong in your eyes? The only hypocrites here are ol' Horny Haggard himself, and one or two others that usually winge when people judge others based on tired old stereotypes, and then does the same thing....

I was referring mainly to Haggard himself as a hypocrite anyway, not everyone in his church or political arena.

Exactly. Whether you agree with someone's views or not, if they're going to profess them to everyone else the least they can do is follow their own teachings.

"I am guilty of sexual immorality, I am a deceiver and a liar.

"There is a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark and I've been warring against it my entire adult life", Haggard said in a letter that was read to his New Life Church in Colorado Springs by a church overseer.

Haggard resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals on Thursday after being accused by a male escort of having had a sexual relationship with him.

He also agreed to step down as senior pastor of the New Life Church on Saturday.

"Evangelist": A preacher of the Christian gospel.
----synonym: gospeller, revivalist
----hypernym: preacher, sermonizer

In other words, someone who tells people what God wants them to do.

After the allegations were made public, Haggard resigned as president of the influential National Association of Evangelicals, an umbrella group representing more than 45,000 churches with 30 million members.
-
Haggard also admitted buying methamphetamine but said he did not use it.

"I was buying it for me, but I never used it," said Haggard
-
"He will continue to be my friend, even if the worst allegations prove accurate," he continued. "Nevertheless, sexual sin, whether homosexual or heterosexual, has serious consequences."
-
He did not identify the hotel. Jones told CNN he did not sell methamphetamine to Haggard, but he said he gave Haggard a contact to obtain the drug and saw him use it on multiple occasions.
-
Haggard's admissions resonated among America's evangelicals and Christian leaders.

Haggard was one of a group of religious leaders who regularly participated in conference calls with White House aides, Time magazine reported.
-
Last year, Time -- citing Haggard's White House access -- put him on its list of the nation's 25 most influential evangelicals.
Wow; 30 million americans following a married but secretly gay crack addict. Got to laugh. And access to the white house too, conference calls with George Bush :D

Hypocrisy is too good a word.

Christians are supposed to follow Christ alone but sadly in practice these mega American TV preachers develop such a personality cult within their churches that people begin to loose sight of what and whom is actually the important figure here.

Hardly surprising, homophobes = gay men who hate themselves

PS The Confederados, if you truly do not know what is meant when people refer to "Evangelicals" you really need to pay more attention to the national discourse of your own nation.

Give me a break, American evangelists are notorius for being exposed as over sexed, hypocrites. Jimmy Swaggart, Jim Bakker off the top of my head.

So yes the fact that evangelical christians seem to follow the leadership f a group of people who have a tendency towards extremely hypocritical behaviour seems to say a lot about their gullibillity, especially considering the fact that these self-same evangelists all live extremely luxurious life-styles on the generous donations of their followers. Also consider that these people are anti-gay, anti-science, anti-all-sorts of personal freedoms for that matter.
So yeah the fact that that these religious arse-holes(the religious american right) have leaders like this does say a lot about them.

It may not say that theyre all a bunch of hypocrites, but it does tell us that they are a gullible bunch of willfully ignorant, morons.

Edit: And that they should be taken a lot less seriously.

To quote a rather famous evangelical: "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

You seem to be throwing a lot of big rocks at Christians in general. When was the last time you heard of Christians strapping on bomb belts to kill innocent people?

Not just christians. They just happen to be the topic of this thread.
Yup islam does seem to have the title of "the most violent" of the present day Judeo-christian religions sewn up.
Christianity however seems to have an out-right monopoly for the "sexual perverts and predators" awards, specifically in the states it would seem.

So it would seem, but appearances can be decieving.

I would have to say that ALL of humanity (Christian or otherwise), especially the men, have the propensity to become "sexual perverts and predators".

May I say to you that most perverts and predators in this world are in fact non-christian.

In South Africa for example, would you say that most of the rapes that are committed there are done by rampaging Christians who go out after church on Sundays to rape and pillage the non christian population?

Is ALL of humanity standing on the pulpit and preaching their righteousness and virtues - while at the same time being a married, gay, crack whore?

Today's thumbsuck = most perverts and predators are NOT-christian.

Once again the hypocrisy stinks.

And, as for that other comment; something about evangelical and throw the first stone? Was christ in it for the money? (Or the illicit sex, or his crack habit?)
