Well not you maybe but certainly this idiot at incredible connection today. Can't believe the trash he talked to the elderly pensioner about the AV protecting his computer by automatically removing the virus/malware/spyware. Then it got me thinking again...

1. How many people actually know the correct procedure in dealing with for eg. spyware?

I bet many think it's fine to just remove the offensive application and carry on per normal without thinking about the dangers they may/may not be in already. For me a bare minimum for a good AV would be to request the user to do the most logical thing after having found spyware...

2. CHANGE your password in every online account that matters as you have no idea who captured/recorded any of your credentials.

If you have not been doing this to date, now is a good time to start.

I agree with the changing of password if a threat potentially stole your details, eg spyware, backdoor trojan, etc.

Please tell me the correct procedure to remove a virus, which my AV seeming, stupidly, decided to act on, out of it's own accord.

I can't say as i get really picky when I find something (although I don't have this issue anymore as I use linux). A good AV would report the file location and I would write down the exact path and then delete it MYSELF through running cmd.exe (note that you shoudl run the cli as root user in vista upwards by right clicking it and selecting run as admin. then use the remove command (by typing rm {PATH_that_you_wrote_down_} and then making sure that it is removed by running the exaxt xommand again by simply pressing up which will fill in the exact command again. You should get a error saying that file does not exits meaning it is gone. For safety scan that exact file or whole system again with AV

quite a few AVs these day have automatic removal as default, but I've seen some fool trying to see people AV to stop spam...... after he left I told them that wouldn't do anything

Quite a few AV do have a feature like that yes but some like bitdefender do not remove files that in archive format so will require manual removal through cli. This is not always easily done by the average user who is unaware about the fact that the cli must be run as root ro admin for this to be effective.

Doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

AVs are often set to remove thing by default without asking the user for confirmation. The salesman is trying to sell a product not educate clueless users about security 101. Commercial
law does allow a salesman to hype the product as long as what he is saying is not factually incorrect.

A good AV would report the file location and I would write down the exact path and then delete it MYSELF through running cmd.exe
The AVs have tricks built in to force removal even when a normal delete doesn't work. The AV service usually also runs with system/admin privileges so you could save
yourself the "Run as admin" bother. On the whole I don't see any benefit to removing it manually, but to each his own I guess.

I agree with you though on the Incredible Con salesmen. The other day a guy was telling me about the incredible lifetime warranty on the product. So I showed him the 2 year warranty printed on the back. Salesman shuffles off mumbling something.

I've heard my fair share of cringe worthy statements from Incredible Connection staff. But this one doesn't really seem all that bad. It is not the Sales Rep's duty to educate the customer on all aspects of PC security, only to sell the product. And he did not really misrepresent the product. If the customer wants more info on PC security there are lots of good places on the internet to get the info. Granted, I didn't hear the entire convo, but from what the OP posted I don't really see any reason for this thread.

It was not the sales rep but the guy at the service station. He WOULD be expected to know this.
