lol. Most people are happy with adsl speeds. Problem comes with Price,CAP And shapping!!
That is the 3 big no no's in ADSL in this country. otherwise it would be a great service.

I would jump on the adsl wagon if adsl costed R600 a month all inclusive(with an isp account) and a 5gig "internal downloads" cap. That would be great. oh when will the SNO come!

..- dot dot dash ;)

No offence, but you come off as a bit pretentious by saying that the majority of people complaining are download freaks that flip and post all their negative comments when you are neither the one paying for the ADSL service, and have the capability of circumventing the cap via your proxies.

I can imagine that if you were in fact paying for Telkom's ADSL service, and did not have the proxies that you do (like most of us), you too would find a lot more to complain about.

And yet you're here asking how to get round the cap?

Hypocrite.

Yes Aels, what is your point then.
I go past the 3 gig cap limit every month, but I'm not a download freak either. I browse the internet and the kids consume the rest playing games on local servers. Lately my usage is about 8 gigs a month. For this Telkom penalises me. I never use or abuse anyone’s proxies either or purport to do so. I have heard that a proxy isn't good for gaming anyway.
Oh and of course I come to MyADSL.[:D]

For this privilege I have to pay R680 plus vat to Telkom for line rental plus R539 to MWeb for my small 6 gig account. That is R1314.20. Besides a few thousand people that maybe can afford to spend this on a mere internet connection, I'm afraid the bulk of the rest of South Africa cannot. Telkom need to start cutting prices so that all South Africans can one day afford ADSL. With all due respect Aels, people don't earn anything near what people in the UK do. Unless perhaps you are the CEO of Telkom who took home R11 million the last financial year. But then he would get ADSL free anyway as the CEO.

well i am not going through any proxies now .... doing normal ssh, pop and browsing and all is wonderful. 3 gig cap would be more than enough for me .... did some normal http downloads last night and it was flying !! (better than I get at work at the moment)

dont you think its only people with negative things to say that comes to the forum ... i think there are lots and lots of people who doesnt post, cause they are happy with the service

if you wanna play online games and abuse it with p2p (which is probably illegal stuff anyway) go get ISDN, end of story [:D]

discussion closed !

Well of course, but the reason we complain is because we're being fipped off. The speed of ADSL is fine (not as fast as elsewhere, but still fine), what gets us is the unfair capping and the port shaping, as well as the genereally poor service we recieve, huge "installation" delays etc etc.

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">... i think there are lots and lots of people who doesnt post, cause they are happy with the service<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Well you think wrong (and your English is utterly terrible). People that don't post are generally those that simply can't be bothered complaining because, in true South African tradition, it tends to never get you anywhere, or those that simply don't know about this site.

Discussion NOT closed. Why should we get ISDN if we want to do online gaming, because you say so? So then we have to incur call costs as well as subscription, lack of always-on access etc etc? No.

I really do hope you're not a Brit. If you are then it would be nice if you'd disappear, because you're embarassing me.

cap = no problem for regular normal use (which i think the service was intended for)

port shaping = not experienced that yet, so wouldnt know. what kind of port shaping ?

installation delay = with you on that one, it is terrible, but helps if you know a telkom techie :)

WTF???
First you say the 'we' are ALL download freaks (that's why we use the 3GB in YOUR OPINION) and then yousay we must use ISDN for online gaming. And lose 24/7 internet acess, NO NO and NO!

&gt;&gt;&gt; Well this is Aels IP:***************

why you doing this ? showing everyone my IP address, if you going to do this, why just not post everyone’s IP address along with their post

what if I came through a proxy of mine, then everyone knows it ... moderators does have a responsibility and I am sure there is a privacy policy on here somewhere ....

I actually can take action against this, just want to follow up with RPM, because that was unnecessary

Ok Aels, you have a point. I will edit the IP out.

Perhaps people are confused by your profile that indicates United Kingdom?

Play nicely, guys. AELS - you currently have a contrary viewpoint, but methinks you should perhaps do some more reading of topics and past postings on this forum, before forming an opinion - I'd bet you'd change your opinion after doing so...

well ... i was in the UK ... just returned to South Africa ... but what if I was at work or I was using one of my *private* proxies ... then you just give my IP address away like that. have emailed RPM , so will see what he has to say about this. EVEN if I still was in the UK (and there I did have a static IP add), does it give you the right to publish my IP address ?

Don't know about SA, but I was closely involved with legal issues in the UK when it comes to the internet and believe you me, Metropolitan Police had to have a warrant to get IP addresses and now BTTB just gives mine away FOR FREE :).... (your lucky it was transparent proxy)

maybe he should *also* think before just posting. think I wont post here anymore anyway, cuz all you get is criticism and negativity. there are worse things in life than getting 50k when downloading ;-) hehehe .. okay i will shut up now, with everyone knowing my IP address now, I might get murdered in bed tonight

Ok Aels.

Perhaps now you should change your profile.

Just to make the situation fair, I hereby post my IP.

Hammer it. As by tomorrow it will have been reset by Telkom [:D]

just for the sake of it .... I once had some issues with a guy who defrauded me and some other people in the UK... and from the IP address in the headers of his emails and with the position I had within the internet industry in the UK , I tracked him down to a desk in a library in Plymouth, happily surfing away ;-)

So its good that Telkom hides me behind some transparent proxy, 1 point to Telkom, 0 to BTTB ;-)

oh and ;-) = chill and don’t jump on your little horse

That's unfair on MyADSL. Rather criticise me.

Just a quick post from one of the people who do normally not post :p I personally agree with everyone that says the 3GB cap isn't enough. At my home we use 2 pc's, 1 for myself in my flat and 1 for the parental figures and sibling in the house :p Since getting ADSL there hasn't been a single month where my house hasn't been capped. At the end of last month I finally decided it was enough and opened an additional account for myself. Now the first thing that always comes to mind is that you get capped because you permanently download. I know in my case and I think in many other cases it rings more true that you download because you are capped.

This month I reached my cap on the 12th, anyone can come to my house at any given time and they will not find a single piece of p2p or other download software on any pc. The daily usage though does consist of:

* Normal internet surfing on a daily basis, sites I visit every day are MyADSL, News24, F1-Live, Collegehumour and PVPOnline. In the house it mainly consists of internet banking and the occasional search for info regarding farms/farming
* Gaming from 1 pc, about 2-3 hours of Warcraft III on Battle.Net, some text based games and then IRC for a short while
* Downloading of class lecture notes by both myself and younger sister, as we are both still studying at varsity and are required to get our notes in some way.

That's all, 4 people, 2 pc's, no unnecesary downloading what so ever and 3gb was used up in 12 days. I now sit with an account that I can't use internationally at all so in essence its a waste for the rest of the month and this really irritates me, so far that I am in actual fact considering to use the account for downloading for the remainder of the month. I don't know exactly what I'll download yet, but I'm sure I can find something pointless.

Hi Arzy,

My usage is fairly similar to yours. A bit of browsing. Also news24 etc and the kids play a bit of games.
Its now half way through the month and I have used 3.8 gigs. And like yourself I dont P2P.

So going back a bit, one wonders where Telkom came up with the story of most users only using 1.8 gigs on average.

I don't think gaming falls within "acceptable usage" [;)]

I bet Telkom would discontinue ADSL tomorrow if it wasn't a requirement to appear as a "world class" telecommunications company to potential investors. The only way they could protect their ISDN and Diginet revenue was to make ADSL as sour as possible and spin some crap about "acceptable usage" and how expensive international bandwidth is.
