I have about had enough of our wonderful sports broadcaster
Super(only what we decide you can watch)Sport.

It is now almost into the second half of the MTN one day games and we have only seen a handfull of games live on TV. This Friday there are two more games on which are not being shown Cobras v Warriors and Lions v Eagles.

Now I have been complaining a lot about the fact that they as the series sponsors are not even showing us one ball of the 4 day competition and this has happened for the last 3 years. I eventually one day got a phone call from Imtiaz Patel who basically told me that it is not economically viable for them to show the 4 day game. Well let us take a look what is being shown on TV when the cricket is on, and this is a one day game remember.

On SuperSport 1 from 10:00am till 01:00 the following morning it is golf, the Nedbank challenge stops play at about 17:00, the cricket only starts at 16:15 but they don't show it.

On Supersport 2 from 11:30 till 21:00 IRB Sevens that is fair enough they can move the cricket to Supersport 6.

Supersport 3 obviously has soccer on it including the major game of the night Kaiser Chiefs v Golden Arrows, have you seen the attandances at these games recently it definately is financially viable.

Supersport 4, hmmm look another day of nothing but soccer.

Supersport 5, motorsport, yachting, mountain biking, motorsport, wrestling that is while the cricket is on.

Supersport 6, hmmm soccer, soccer and guess what live from who knows where soccer the Fifa u/20 womans world cup.

Supersport 7 You know I think that old Imtiaz Patel really loves his soccer cause guess what more soccer.

Supersport 8 More soccer just this time in a different language, they are really treating us here aren't they.

Now comeone are you telling me that some of these channels can't go one afternoon without their soccer fix. Soccer might be the most popular sport in the world but really guys we would like to watch cricket as well. What get's me going even more is the fact that when India plays against Aus they show it live and then highlights twice the same evening while live local cricket is on but they cannot accomodate it. And then you ask why our cricket is in such a bad state and why all the young players are leaving and signing kolpak contracts, because they don't get coverage and without coverage they can't compete with the salaries from overseas. And don't tell me to go to the field and watch it live as I live in Cape Town and there hasn't been a single game at Newlands this year yet. And in total the Cobras will only play one four day game at Newlands this year.

Lastly they don't have to come with the excuse that they don't have commentators for the game or what not, as frankly it will be better to watch the game in silence than listen to Andy Cap's silly jokes and useless comments. I don't care about which school player X attended ten years ago Andy. I also just wonder how are these games which are not being shown affected by the fact that there are no cameras at the ground that third umpires can call on to make decisions.

Finishes ranting

cricket is damn boring. No one watches 4-day matches. So it's pointless showing it.

I certainly don't want my subscription fees being WASTED on cricket.

But I do agree there's too much soccer (even though I'm a soccer fan). But lot's of people like soccer, so basically DEAL WITH IT or cancel your DSTV subscription.

But that is my point, you are allowed to like soccer and not cricket and your subscription fees is anyway wasted on cricket if you watch it or not as Supersport is the sponsor of the four day game, it is called the Supersport series. Just give those of us who actually do like watching cricket a chance to see the game. You still get to watch your soccer.

Just to point out that Supersport a number of years ago paid nearly R60 million for the 5 year TV right to broadcast the local one day series which they are not really doing. At that same time in 2002 they signed a 10 year deal for the Supersport series and almost immediatly took it off the air. I don't know how much they paid for that deal, as it included broadcast rights as well as naming rights of the series for 10 years, but I bet it was in that same region. So if I was you I would really complain to Supersport about the wasting of your subscription fees.

complain? Multichoice is a monopoly. Put simply, THEY DON'T GIVE A ****.

I've tried complaining about a bunch of things. They don't care. They care about maximising profits not keeping subscribers happy.

Ask yourself why Rugby is shown on primetime on MNET but no other sport can ever be shown? Because some backward farmtown twats who only have mnet want to watch super 14 or currie cup. If it were soccer fans asking for a major final to be shown on MNET, they'd say go get stuffed (and have done so in the past). But because these backward oukies love rugby and castle, the sponsors line up. So it's good business. So multichoice don't care about ticking off loyal mnet viewers whose programs are disrupted.

Don't believe Multichoice is the problem here:rolleyes:
This is caused by Supersport. The problem for them is that is cost them too much to cover the matches and they obviously feel they do so at a loss.

I LOVE Supersport.

The domestic 4 day cricket, does not get a lot of a following. So I can understand why it is not viable. And IMO, they cover all the sporting codes pretty well, it is just that soccer seems to played all year round in one part of the globe or other. So there are always matches to be shown.

I like cricket and soccer. But I don't watch the domestic leagues of either sport. People like me make supersport not show the local cricket. Sorry dude.

I prefer cricket and football but I would much rather watch the local cricket than the local soccer.

I love my sport, be it football, rugby, cricket or whatever is on at the time. I agree though, lately Supersport is being run like a money making machine. Yes I understand it's a private company that needs to make a profit but to sponsor a tournament and then not televise it is just madness.

As soon as the PSL gave the rights to SuperSport to televise local football they went crazy with the buying of new cameras and at one stage SS3 had it's own Supersport Active Menu different from the others. It got it's own shows as well. Fine. The Proteas are number 2 in the world with a chance of becoming number 1 if we do well against the Aussies. Yes we get a lot of international stuff and it's appreciated but Kallis, Boucher, Mckenzie, Ntini and Prince are going to retire within the next 2-4 years, it would be nice to see what options our local "test" scene has to offer.

And hasn't it ever crossed Supersport's one track mind that perhaps televising and marketing their own series might actually get the sport the oomph it needs to be financially viable? i.e. what corporate sponsor will want to advertise at a game that isn't televised or sponsor a team that won't get media coverage?

What Multichoice/DStv/Supersport are doing is actually killing all competition in the television industry by buying up all the rights to sports in South Africa/Africa. Last year the Nigerian authorities actually went against DStv when they ruled that the company cannot claim to hold football rights for the whole of Africa and that Nigeria cannot be grouped as a single market with the rest of Africa when it comes to tv rights.

Personally I'm not a big fan of domestic cricket but there's certainly an audience there that might want to watch...Supersport should be obligated to broadcast all games that they have rights for- use it or lose it. Hopefully the new broadcasters launching next year with challenge this 400 pound gorilla.

I like the whole use it or lose it idea concerning the rights although I suspect that there might be a whole bunch of legal issues involved. And this being SA I wouldn't count on the courts or any other regulator for that matter being fair and unbiased.

personally I really think they do a good job...but that is from a football watcher...if I watched anything else a lot I don't think I would be as impressed. But to have a football channel as well as TV shows of...Arsenal...Chelsea, Man Utd, Real, Barce etc....and PSL coverage on a half football channel (SS4)...
I really can't say that SS are bad.
