So with all the insurance threads, who to go with?

So we ordered my wife's convertible, and I'm wondering if I should give someone other than budget a shot. Might as well see how the pricing stacks up, since I'm getting quotes.

I know a lot of guys on here always say "get a broker", please suggest a broker. I'm in Centurion.
Planning to get quotes form the usual suspects otherwise.

Question is are they competitive or is it just the peace of mind you appreciate?

They get you the best prices. Also you will normally never be able to match the prices they can get.

Example: I wanted to insure my car.

Santam - R1700pm
OutSurance - R2400pm (These people are smoking something!)
Budget - R1500

PSG - R590pm

Outsurance gave me ridiculous rates as well... R1800 per month for my 2014 Polo 1.6. I've never claimed before, and my car parks in a secure garage during the day and at night. Not sure how they managed to come up with such an absurd rate.

Eventually went with Budget at R750/month.

Shop around yourself, only taking into account the service offered.
Reason being that one persons profile is not going to match yours, so where they got a low price might not result in the same for you.

Case in point - the dreaded Outsurance beats everyone I've spoken to thus far, by at least 20% (and I've spoken to 6 or 7 brokers now)

I ended up staying with budget. They are just so damn cheap! For a ~R500K sportish car, full comprehensive insurance for R910 p/m, includes sasria and hail damage. Excess of R5000 (which I'll pay with a smile if it comes to that). My main concern is to keep the premiums low.

Most other insurers came back >R1000 a month. Got quotes as high as R2000. Mi-way owes me R400, they quoted R1372.

Two accidents in a year though and the excess will **** you.

Ask them what your premium will be with an excess of R2500 and R0. Then compare how "cheap" they are. When I was shopping around a couple of months ago I got very very low premiums from the insurance companies by upping my excess.

In the end though I stuck with Santam and my broker. Car + household for about R1000pm after I "threatened" to leave (used to be closer to R1600-R1800)

Not really. I can afford a R10K surprise without too much hassle. We live significantly below our means.
We aren't accident prone, with only 2 minor scrapes in the last 10 years. It's funny that both happened within the same month :)

I specifically asked the other insurers to quote with a R5K excess.
