Twitter helped South African police track down July riots instigators

Major social media companies, including Twitter, helped the Hawks track down some of the alleged instigators of violent looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng that shook South Africa in July 2021.

That is according to a City Press report detailing an elaborate year-long investigation leading to the arrest of 20 suspects who appeared in the Durban Magistrates' Court on Friday, 12 August 2022.

Such wow. They got cell phones and dates of births.

Wonder if these nobs used some IP address obfuscation at the very least?

If they didnt it would have been easy to ask Telkom, MTN etc. Who used this IP at the time of the tweet. Use that client/sim card info to determine locations.

should read

Hawks expertly used social media post as a strawman to distract from implicating the real instigators, the politicians who made calls on other media outlets such as TV and public gatherings.

What does Elon think? Do they have the same rights of free speech as that other instigator of violence, Trump?
Nobody said they have any rights. Trump included.

Everyone is fed up with the double standards of Twitter. If you ban Trump/Zuma etc you need to ban anyone else on the same merits.

Twitter does not do that to the left leaning loonies.

According to the South African Special Risk Insurance Association (Sasria), it was the most costly incident of rioting in the world in the past decade
The chaos and civilian response to the attacks led to the deaths of almost 350 people.
The suspects — which included a doctor, teacher, hospital manager and private banker — were released on R3,000 bail each and are set to be charged with conspiracy and incitement to commit public violence and arson.
Most costly event in the world and more than double the deaths of the Soweto uprising, by far the worst atrocity during Apartheid. Yet R3000 for the instigators? Someone please explain this to me.

I agree. Disgrace. Petty criminals are denied bail but the ones with fancy pants lawyers and a Stalingrad defense walk free.

Low hanging fruit........the real arseholes are still out there, but it's a start. Besides, they probably won't touch Zuma's siblings as they probably fear there could be a repeat.......

What about Zuma's son Edward Zuma who said they are at war prior to the arrest and they are prepared to die?

Is social media by randos with few followers now more powerful than national TV?

Hehe that night I reported many accounts for instigating violence. Twitter banned nearly all the accounts I reported. I wonder if any of them are these guys hehe

I reported tweets from Zuma's daughter as well and others for inciting violence. I only got a notification more than 6 months later the reports were acted on.

Yeah same. Took a long time for them to ban accounts. But it was joy receiving messages that they actually take action. Facebook doesn't.

If the instigators were people on twitter and they are being charged than SA should ask twitter for all the details of the accounts and tweets reported and when they were acted on. Then our government should sue twitter for the damaged.

All I felt was anger for the long duration it took twitter to act on my reports but for any US election conspiracy tweets were immediately deleted.

This is yet another minor distraction, to appease the" nation "and investors etc. The primary instigators and architects of this event will remain untouched. The only question is, why?... What hold do they have on Ramaphosa and Co?

His daughter does make a point but she must realize she has over 200K followers and most people in SA own smartphones

How she is not listed as one of the main instigators is beyond me. She should be in prison.

Made a ton of reports, kept screenshot of blatant high follower people trying to cause even more violence. People taunting race wars etc... Twitter said they "acted on it" but I checked and majority of the accounts were left untouched.

They even said they acted on dudu Zuma. Yet she is still on Twitter, still causing crap. Any other platform would have banned her fairly quickly.
