I have an unused diginet line I am trying to find a use for so I thought of creating a data warehouse in the building the line is in.

Basically I want to create it for our maintenance clients. Im looking for some kinda software or system thats easy to install on client servers and/or workstations that will allow them to create an offsite backup on servers behind the diginet line.

I dont mind paying for the software as long as its simple for the client and reliable with the data. Also something that uses bandwidth efficiently is important.

I would prefer something that works across platform though its more important this works for MS servers.

What solutions are out there for this?

What version of Acronis? Can I deploy it across multiple OS`s for many clients? Im looking through their products and if I have around 200 maintenance clients I want to backup this looks like an extremely expensive way to go.

Subversion

That looks like code management... not so much incremental web based backups for many clients.

Right now I am looking at Bacula.. Any other suggestions? ... and for the love of God, dont just mention a product and not tell me why you recommend it.

Not sure what you actually want to do, so difficult to recommend something. Do you want to back up several client PCs to a remote site via the Diginet line; or do you want to create a data warehouse??

I would like to backup several hundred client desktops and around 20 servers (SBS2008, 2003, Ubuntu etc) initially then once all my clients data/backups are sorted, perhaps offer the service to other people. Right now I am using the term data warehouse as a place our clients can backup to .. to safely store their backup data.

Have you looked at DoubleTake? They have a block based backup, real time, backup system. This is good for WAN links since only changes made to the file move across the line, i.e. if you have 500gb db, and change a single row, then only that change is replicated - and not the entire file. Not sure about costs though.

Are all the clients based in a single location? If so it may be better to use a WAN optimisation device to backup between the live and backup sites?

Clients are mostly in the same city, a handful are in other cities, but this will be wan based.

Then take a look at doubletak ROBOTechnology. It is bit based and optimised to work over a LAN. It also requires little configuration - again not sure about the price....

I don't have the first clue at to what may work but this reminded me about the recently announced (released?) OpenStack initiative - maybe there's something there?

That is NOT a data warehouse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_warehouse.

I would look at technology that supports RSync - supports differential and you can backup to central Linux hosted storage. Many hardware devices out there support Rsync. Look at Netgear's ReadyNAS product suite for starters.
