Hi, I'm totally new here and need some help. I'm not an IT guru, so please speak in laymans terms. I can find myself around XP though :) . I have a 5102G router, my main pc connected via lan cable, and 3 additional pc's connected wirelessly. All works fine. What I'd like to do is this - the 3 remote pc's I'd like to be able to manage their connection from my main pc, limit their cap, disconnect them, etc. At the moment they all just connect as and when wanting to. How can I set them up so as to manage them from my pc? These 3 pc's have wireless lan cards as well as normal wired lan cards. All run XP pro except one on xp home. The main pc (my pc) has the router software loade on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am no expert, but I'll try with some ideas, and we see if the network experts will help.

I am 100% unfamiliar with that router but I assume it is acting as your wireless access point. Unless someone knows better, I would think that to achieve what you want to achieve, you need to interpose some kind of gateway between the other PCs and the internet link. A gateway on which you could load something to "manage" the other connections.

If it were me, what I would do is this. Buy another access point. Disable the wireless access on the router. Buy a switch. Install a second network card in your main PC. Link your PC to the original router and to the switch on separate network cards. Link the new access point to the switch and re-setup the wireless network. Designate your PC as the gateway and set up the networking on the other PCs to access the net through your PC ( Network Setup Wizard ). Run something on your PC to impose the required limits. Maybe look at Softperfect Bandwidth Manager.

You could do all this via another PC if you have an old one around - I use an old Celeron 900 PC to do this type of thing. You would then link your PC to the switch too, and designate this other PC as gateway. You could run something like IPCOP or a Linux Squid firewall on the extra PC to control the connections.

Maybe others have a better way.
