Demand = supply...

Let that sink in for a moment.

So what do you think those 20,000MW of coal is doing at 3am?... Baseload isn't big or clever you are just used to it.
Is is being used as there is demand of 20,000MW. My example 600MW power station is part of the 20,000MW that is needed and is being provided at 3AM.
Just because you go to sleep at night doesn’t mean that the world shuts down.

The graph is based on actual real life actual demand data from this January. Night time lows of about 20,000MW demand and daytime peaks of up to 27,000MW demand.

This means that if you can like to remove one theoretical 600MW power generation unit you will be short on the generation side and will have to spin up OCGTs or load shed.

Maybe you should revisit your understanding of baseload….it’s in the name. The base load on power stations by the country. It’s always there. ;)

No we need to all change our habits, that 20GW isn't needed at night, we can just shut it down. Steel mills, refineries and such don't need power... Come on man you know this, we all know we can live with 12 hours of power.

Of course sure yes why didn’t I think of that. All the street lights, robots, power to you’re house, the mines, those hospitals nobody needs at night anyway. While we’re at it better ask Teraco and IS and to turn off their data centres because seriously who needs them at night. Right? Also Airports. And all the malls and supermarkets. Those fridges and freezers all around the country should be off at night. While we’re at it those cellphone towers are such a pest. Better turn them off at night too.

So yes. We should all change our habits. We can just shut down the 20GW at night.

One request though…You first. :ROFL:

Glad to see you all agree. Better tell Eskom that daytime power is worth the same as overnight then. Peak power is worth 4 X off peak and Standard (day time in the week) is worth 2x off peak.

The reason why demand is that high is because it's so cheap. It's pumping water, it's smelting etc... It's the power they sell for 10c to Richards Bay.

Hours of demand are not created equally and daytime is still worth more than night time right now. Your "it's coal or nothing" is absoluteism. Solar would be helpful and is cheap, it's not 100% solution, no.
