Big questions over Eskom crackdown on people with solar panels

Solar industry players, the Association for Renewable Energy Practitioners (Arep), and installer AWPower have raised concerns over a lack of clarity regarding Eskom's crackdown on households and businesses with solar panels.

In December 2024, Eskom staff began visiting the utility's direct customers to demand that those with grid-tied solar systems install additional equipment and obtain new approvals to be considered compliant.

Just to be clear, the majority of the cost is not from Eskom themselves but the engineers Eskom requires sign off from. They are independent engineers registered with ECA(SA) and all have their own fee structure but the requirements are fairly clear to them as they have been in meetings with Eskom and other parties to understand the requirements. Among those requirements is a DGSL and Kiosk accessible by Eskom fitted with 2m of your Eskom meter as well as a more comprehensive CoC. Eskom requires the application to be completed and signed off by the Engineer.

A list of engineers can be found here:

I'm not really seeing these big questions.

When they come to serve me with the fine, please tell them to bring a side cutters with so they can cut me off in the street and they can recycle the paper that the fine is printed on. TIA.

BCM should be following suit soon

Perfect. I'm already shortlisting suitable inverter generators that will play nice with my Sunsynk.

*YAWN* tell Eskom to get their dirty lines off my property before I take legal action against them,... They can go fly a kite.

The myBB figures of R25-R50k for the process to register my system allows a lot of scope for a small inverter Genset, more panels and another Hubble. Not stressed in the least.
Yep. I would add another 12 panels but I need to replace a roof first lol otherwise I would have done it.
In other news, my 3-4 month old application is finally gaining traction at Eskom.
I've received two SMS in the past few days to say it's been approved and they're 'on it'. I imagine they have to reprogram my meter now.

Talking about that - you have to feel for the rural farmers who now have to maintain the servitudes around the lines so that Eskom can get to them for maintenance. We had a 6 day outage here and Eskom couldn't get to the lines to repair them because of the trees. When they finally found the fault, they had to apply to be able to remove trees - the farmers all got involved and said - there you go after clearing the bush. Eskom just don't have the budget or manpower anymore.
