The government should reduce import taxes on energy efficiency devices.

Guys, beware of one thing here. Your cheap $ will get you a cheap panel, more so if you buy from Chinese manufacturers. There is quite a lot of guys on 4x4Community that are crying over the cheap panels they bought. A 150W panel that barely does 75W. Ecco panels is one brand named.

So, go right ahead and buy this cheap ****, but don't expect The panel to perform to its sticker specs, or help/refund form the guy you bought it from.

My advice is to buy reputable panel brands like Solarworld etc, those manufactured outside of China. Same goes for solar/deep-cycle batteries. My 2c, use it, don't use it.

True to fact that Chinese in most cases make cr@p products and they blatantly lie about the features and performance without a qualm in the world.

Let's not be nasty and generalize. Fact is, the Chinese economy is the strongest on earth, let's just say comparing it with the South African economy it is like comparing an elephant with a flea. At present they have the latest technology given away by so called developed countries because to manufacture locally it is too expensive and the cheap Chinese labor is too tempting. Most of high end products are made in China. The same factory who makes Iphones, makes also Xiaomi phones which are as good as Iphone and to piss off Apple, the operating system on them is Android but modified in such a way to look and perform like IOS only better, (the os they made is called MIUI and is used by more than 130 million people world wide). Of course some companies in China will take shortcuts and cut on quality in order to get very cheap products but you have a zillion of them and you can choose well known brands like Renesola, Yingli and so on, which you can buy also locally. Problem is that local suppliers are too greedy and their markup is unrealistic, it is like by bringing products here they behave like they manufacture them here and add up to 100% to the initial price, and to top it up it is this South African thing called price fixing so no matter that the products are imported or made locally (some agreements with Renesola and other manufacturers) the prices are the same.
With the existing energy crisis all suppliers of energy saving and generating products should be prosecuted and locked up. It is criminal to sell LED lights with R100 when they came from China at below 1.5$ each.
The government should put in place legislation regarding energy efficiency on all new electrical appliances sold like EU did and SA would not be dumping ground for obsolete energy guzzling Samsung, LG and other products.
I will keep looking for a decent supplier of PVs. In the mean time I ordered 60 x 6w LED lights at $1.5 each from a Chinese online shop.

Tell me about it..

The amount of effort I had to put in to find an energy efficient fridge was ridiculous.
The manufacturers websites don't publish information here, and you end up googling for hours to compare products.

I eventually went with an A++ rated fridge (as the A+++ are pretty much non available here).
Bosch KGW36XL30 - rated at 227KW/yr

Some small updates on my latest build here - http://goingsolar.co.za/2015/08/23/off-grid/

So tell us about the Chinese manufactured solar panel that you would recommend? The one that performs according to it's specs?

This thread has nothing to do with cellphones or other products. I myself is on my 5th HTC phone in a row. Nothing wrong with it. But that is besides the point, as we are talking solar panels.

Hi Lord Faquart, I am looking for PVs, right now I am busy installing an Axpert 5KVA at home. Today I finished the wiring of the sub DB, it will take other 2 days to finish as I am fussy and I want to do a perfect install. Once I finish I will be looking only for PVs, I will let you know. I will be looking for known high quality brands.
Thanks for the Amerisolar offer, it looks tempting. Is VAT included in the R2500? Do you have spec sheets for the product? Will it take hail punishment, I mean tennis ball size? We had this kind of hail for the last 3 years.

There is others, but Solarworld panels comes to mind. Manufactured in Germany and sold by various companies in SA, including Sinetech. As for solar batteries, there is none better than Omnipower, also available at Sinetech.

I am looking for panels of at least 300W each as my north facing roof will only take 24 x 1m x 2m panels. Right now I try to source 12 panels with open circuit voltage below 48V each to create 4 strings of 3 for my inverter (Axpert 5KVA).
Solarworld panels would be great if I can get them at a decent price. I had no luck in getting Omnipower batteries as nobody has stock, I bought 4x 260A AGM, gel RITAR batteries (weight 70Kg each) from Rectifier, just hope I did the right thing, Omnipower next time or maybe Powerwall.

If you're in Joburg we have a range of hybrid inverters, on-grids, solar pumps and solar panels. Without trying to punt my company too much.

We've been dealing with Chinese products in this field for many years and there are many levels of quality coming out of China. Good, bad and ugly, my advise would be that make sure you first get samples before importing a container load if you choose to go this route - will take longer, but will avoid a lot of potential headaches.

I can't vouch for having the cheapest products on the market, but we have tried and tested everything we sell and offer the local backup, support and advice if anyone is interested. http://www.bundupower.co.za/solar.php

Put this system into my house about 9 months ago (5kW) - A hybrid system so it basically has the advantages of grid-tied whilst still offering an alternative to a generator for the backup component.

Cape Town suppliers have panels at R6.8 + vat / Watt for a pallet. Renesola Panels.
Thats cheaper than I can ship in for these days.

A pallet is 28 panels, I might be interested in splitting with others if there is any interest in a group buy.
