Excellent idea - we can put all those old farts who were fired for no reason back to work.

I wouldn't mind filling up the pool and having a solar array in the back garden, with backup generator running off alternative fuels.

If everyone starts generating their own electricity, there will be no need for Eskom. The ANC will never allow this how would they justify stealing Billions? They would also have no reason to apply for more loans.
We just have to wait until all their stuff breaks, shouldn't be long now.

I hate the sound of a generator around me. I'd rather have it generated off site.

Genius. Is there anything else we should privately do? I mean there's not much left that we aren't.

The problem with this is now everyone with a home needs to be an engineer, a safety inspector etc etc...
Just the other day a generator exploded in a guys face. Accidents happen, centralizing it allows us to have specialists handle the problem.
But yeah... not that eskom and specialist goes well together.

Exploded in a guys face? I do not see how that is possible, unless he was filling the generator with petrol while it was running?

I worked for Eskom for many years. Its a cash cow for the cadre elites. Interference at the money trough will be vehemently defended.
It's being done already with Mantashe as the general leading the "retreat" cosily from within the unassailable fortress of patronage that is the ANC. In his position as minister of energy he and his generals block all attempts to actually improve the situation. In favour of maintaining the status patronage. He's shielding that patronage network from instability due to progress as successfully as he shielded Zuma from accountability during that presidency. As sure as he lead the charge to kick out Mbeki to make way for Zuma and then led the charge to make sure Zuma gained the presidency. As sure as he, as the ANC secretary general, is the highest paid individual in the ANC, and possibly the single person who's actions have cost South Africa the most during its entire history. He's the one calling the shots.

I honestly don't know why people think things will change with more or less the same greedy fat cats hogging up the show all the time.

Solving South Africa's power crisis — everyone generate their own power

Solidarity has called on small power producers to apply in their hundreds for generation permits.

According to Solidarity, the large-scale entry of small power producers into power generation is needed to resolve the country's power crisis.
That is a great idea, but will still take some time. I, and many others already have 8KW(and larger) inverter generation installed which on a great sunny day have large capacity unused, but we are not allowed to push it back into the grid. Maybe this is a quick way to get relief on the grid?

You just said the same thing as Solidarity.

It's ridiculous that for the sake of stability and anti-corruption, the suggestion is to de-centralise an inherently centralised function i.e. power production

Boggles the mind
