Hi all
Around 2 years ago when my cousin came back from America after working there a few months, he braught back a MacBook which he baught from someone for very cheap. The MacBook wasn't really working 100% and my cousin gave it to me, saying if I'm able to fix it up I can keep it.
Back then I wasn't in to Apple at all, I didn't really like Apple though I just got my first iPhone. So I didn't give the Mac much attention, tried a fresh OS install etc but it kept giving issues so I gave up, put it in my safe and kind of forgot about it.
The other day I thought of it again and discovered it in my safe today. I was surprised to see that the Apple website said it can take OS 10.11, it's a mid 2009 MacBook white with 2 GB RAM and a 160 GB hard drive.
It currently has OS 10.8 installed and runs fine, but after running for a while it will freez up, not totally freez up sort of stalls but stutters if playing music or something, only way out is then to do a hard reboot. Thing is also, when doing a hard reboot it doesn't always want to come on, the lights come on and you can hear activity inside, but no Apple startup sound. The way to fix this is usually to take out the battery and to leave it a while, then try again. sometimes when failing to start up you can also hear a click sound inside, almost sounds like the sound a hard drive will make.

So my first thought is that the hard drive is stuffed, but apart from putting in a new hard drive which I would have to buy because I don't have any lying around, do you think it will at all be worth spending any money on this machine given its age? Won't it just turn out to be a bottomless pit which I throagh money at without any joy? First it will be hard drive, then RAM and then there's also the battery which is probably completely stuffed.

BTW I was quite impressed that it started up right away when I plugged it in this afternoon, also quite impressed that the latest OS, a version from 2015 still supports a MacBook from 2009, or they say so anyway.

Yes, it is most likely hard drive.
I am impressed that you still want use it. :)
Can you upgrade memory on this MAC? 2GB it is what I currently have on my laptop 2005/6 running win XP. Not a lot for modern OS.

Try a RAM upgrade first. Cheap and easy. If it still stalls look at the drive.

to test your drive:

go to an istore or apple dealer near you, take in a flash drive (4gb at least) and ask them to copy a bootable version of the mavericks installer on the flash drive. (they will do this free of charge)

then, to boot from the flash drive, hold down the option key (alt) while the machine begins to boot.
you will be presented with available drives to boot from, in your case, the internal drive and the flash drive (yellow usb icon).
follow the instructions in the video below ***except*** you need to hold down the "alt" key to select your flash drive as the startup drive, in the video the "c" key is held down to start up from a cd

once you have run disk utility, remember not to install the operating system, just repair the internal drive - as in the video

RAM upgrade to 4 GB will cost me around R1000, not cheap in my book, I need DDRII800. Do you know where I can get it cheaper than around R500 for a 2 GB stick?

If I can get it going again it will be a bonus, I won't use it as a work machine or anything, not a must that I have to get this thing working, I still have a Windows laptop as well.

You sure it's DDR2? R500,00 per module sounds pretty reasonable.

Interesting, despite what the official specs of this machine claims, it's picking up my 5 GHz as well as my 2.4 GHz Wifi, according to the specs it's suppose to only support 2.4.
