Some major retailers are not keen on supporting Apple Pay

A real, average broke user who needs to have a phone that can handle QR codes, and be sufficiently technologically adept to figure out how to use the system? Give it a rest. That user is going to end up using old fashioned credit card swiping.

Precisely this...

I'm game for all sorts of new "technologies" and I played with a QR Code payment platform for about 30 seconds before I just gave up, and used my card instead and uninstalled the app.

Those new Standard Bank cards on the other hand seem very interesting, the tap and go is a great idea, especially since its limited to small value purchases.

Oh, I thought you had an actual place in our country where that was true and I could get the Note 4 for cheaper :( Tabloids dont sell phones :( I just checked a couple of local retail outlets and the Note4 is still more expensive than the Note3 :( Perhaps I should send them that article :D

Well he did say they're selling less, not selling for less.

Don't underestimate the American shopper. If the retailers execute this right and bundle their new payment option with discounts and cash-backs, the takeup will be massive. In essence CurrentC will save the retailers the card processing fee to a great portion. Based on 1 trillion dollars of payments per annum, that is anywhere from 75 billion dollars upwards - so a ton of money the retailers can use to incentivise the users to use the cumbersome QR payment. Even if it means to give a 1% cash back, it is more than consumers currently get.

I do think that MCX will go full on against the card providers. I am not sure why the media paints it as Apple/ApplePay losing out, as their payment volume will always be very, very small.

Its already live with some bug names in the US http://www.wired.com/2014/10/where-can-i-use-apple-pay/

While many will not adopt it, many will. So its here to stay, I think.

The list seemed a bit limited when it was initially announced—longer on specialty shops, and shorter on big chains. But with the addition of Chevron, Texaco, and Walgreens, it’s getting more robust. (Also, note that the biggest names on the list, Target and Starbucks, are still in the “apps”-only category). Still, enough big names are participating—Nike, Sephora, Toys’R’Us—that they will undoubtedly draw others into the race for technology-friendly customer convenience. Although it’s probably a bit early to throw away your wallet entirely, this may be the push NFC needs to become a more viable payment method in 2015.

If anything this will also help push competitors as well, so everyone wins.

CurrentC is an abomination.

The problem is not QR codes, but the harvesting of user data and direct access to the users' bank account from companies that have show in the past they have no idea about data security.

I think there is a very good chance that the app will not get into the Apple App Store and if Google follows suit it will be dead in the water.

So the data harvesting stuff is not really a rumour then?

Also, I've heard that the method they use to do the payments isn't covered by the fraud mechanisms in place in the states, so if a fraudulent transaction happens the account holder is up shyte creek without a paddle.

The platform will fail spectacularly in that case then..

American consumers are rightly worried about their security after so many retailers have had breaches recently.
