Got a phone call from a Private Number.

A lady answers and calls herself Geraldine. She then asks to speak to [Name].
I told her this is him and she asks "is your number with Vodacom [insert number she just called here].
She then responds with "You have been a client with us for a very long time and we'd like to offer you some benefits to make your airtime last longer".
I told her that my airtime doesn't run out and I'm actually using less than what I'm given every month.
She barely let me finish and remarked "Oh, so are you saying our systems are lying?"
... "yes"
*call disconnects*

:D

Props for the background noise making it sound like a busy call center though even if most of them don't sound like that at all.

I never answer calls from private numbers or numbers not in my address book. If it's important they can leave a message.

Not sure that you can call it a scam. I received an SMS saying that I will receive a mail message which has come through today, with all sorts of "specials" from Vodacom.

The problem is before I can "benefit" from the specials, I must "upgrade/ renew" my contract .....

The problem you get is third party companies passing themselves off as your network and offering "cheaper" calls/data (even for landline products), when in fact they have nothing to do with said companies and are misleading gullible people.

Yip,
Also have "TrueCaller" installed, saved me s few times already :p
I "love" trucaller, now anyone can go to their website and get a name to go with the number. So instead of a scammer call going:"Hi, I'm Bob from Scammer-R-Us. Who do I have the privilege of scamming, I mean talking to?" It goes like this: "Hi, Mr Richard Head, I Bob from Vodacon and I would love to con you out of every cent your bank will loan you." You can get the network and name to go with the number. Nice of them to mine all this data from peoples contact lists.

Unfortunately some of the calls I take do come from private numbers, else I'd block them.

Maybe. Although never seen a call center phone from a private number.

Nah they do use private numbers.

BUT you will very rarely see a call centre agent from a reputable company drop the call from their end, otherwise they need to go explain to the boss why it happened.
