Hi Guy's
I appear to be in the same boat. Cannot decide between sony or samsung.
By the way the Sony is available at Rendo's Audio for R10999,00 and Samsung for R 10500,00.
Anyway they also showed me a samsung 610 (100hz) on special @ R12999.00
Please help here as it just get more confusing and all i want is to buy the right unit not to have to replace in the next 5 years.

If you can ... check out the AVA specials on catsdigital.co.za ... they can be ordered this weekend. Also, try pop past the AVA expo ... there are some good deals there.

i'm stuck in the same boat. According to the sales guy the samsung has a response time of 5 ms whereas the sony has a 8ms response time and this makes all the difference in gaming

Yeah, very tempting, saw the Sony and Samsung side by side in store and the Sony has some serious "ghosting" on it compared to the Samsung. Is there a setting to correct this? Both screens seem to be 60Hz :(

Depend what they play on the screens and the lighting.
Was in the new samsung store a few day ago, they were playing a blu ray demo disk and all the pictures on the screens in the shop looked unbelievable.

Well, we just bought a Sony V series at Makro today and very happy with it. :) It's the newer version which comes with Bravia Engine 3.

Ghosting according to the Sony's manual is due to a weak signal.
There are signal meters for each channel in the Channel Setup, best to have a gander at those to confirm if the tv is getting the juice it needs. There are also various signal tweaks, some being quite important, chances are the demo models have been fiddled to bits and not on the optimum.

Great user interface! .Well impressed.
But to be honest I didn't compare it to the Samsung, cause I been reading some reviews which pushed me away. Their price is real good value though.

So glad to be finally sorted with an lcd :)

Gratz man, I went with the Samsung since reviews I read said it was better for gaming, lol! Interesting that, although auto shutting down my PS3 when i turn the TV off would have been cool I cant say its enough to get me to swap. Ice Age 3 tho seemed to have a "blur" to it on the fur movement but that could have just been me.... sigh, choices choices! :wtf:

Well at least the decisions are made and we can get on with our lives!
Not using mine for gaming, although I wish I had the time for it !

I'm dying to get hold of one of those HDTV LCD calibration dvd's , I see there is an old 2005 version on TPB, but at 1.25GB download, I'll skip!

Happy gaming dude!

Just something that ive heard that changed my mind about SONY tv's. I might be wrong so please dont be too nasty.

Sony doesn't have factories in South Africa like Samsung and LG does. so if something happens to your TV outside warranty it gets shipped back to USA or wherever for repairs but the LG or Samsung is fixed locally.

Let me know if im wrong cause it was a reliable source.
Your reliable source speaks bull****. Samsung and LG don't have "factories" in SA. All three brands do some manufacturing locally, in order to avoid duties, but it is usually at an OEM factory.

But service has nothing to do with manufacture. TVs are never shipped back for repair... If a repair can't be effected locally (very rare, considering the modular nature of modern electronics), they'll replace the set.

Any thoughts on how well the 40" Sony would work as a PC screen? I'm currently in the market for one :D

Decisions decisions :(

I'm assuming I'll have to buy a wall mounting kit seperately?

Does the Sony accept DVI input? Or will I have to get a DVI->HDMI adapter/cable? From what I can gather I'll need the cable.
