I recently purchased the Sony 42" Plasma FWD42V1 from a company that was closing down. For the life of me i cannot figure out how to connect the Plasma screen to DSTV. At the moment i connected it with an s-video connector from my DVD recorder but the quality is not good.

Does anyone have this Plasma and can suggest a different way to connect.

What kind of decoder do you have acey?
If possible, connect decoder s-video to tv s-video

If your DSTV decoder has a scart connector (latest single view decodes don't) that will give you the best output. As far as I know the Sony Plasma doesn't have a scart in connector but you can get a scart-to-component or scart-to-svideo converter and run the relevant cables from that. If the Sony plasma has component in, go that route as it provides the best quality.

Make sure your DSTV unit is outputting either the component or s-video signal from the scart output. To check this, using your DSTV remote, press:
"Menu -> Advanced Options -> TV Installation -> 9949 -> Scart Output ->"
Set: "TV Scart Output" to "Svideo" or "component" and then select "Accept these settings"

If you have a newer single view decoder without a scart connector or you're just after the simpler option, you can get a RCA-to-svideo cable which will allow you to connect your DSTV directly to your plasma.

There shouldn't be any need for an "external TV Box", if he can connect the DVD recorder then he should be able to connect the DSTV. As far as I understand the problem, the plasma unit doesn't have composite (red, white & yellow cable) or scart connectors which is what the DSTV unit has as standard output connectors. Making use of a cable converter as explained about should solve the problem.

The Monitor only has the HDTV cables, a DATA cable and an S-video.

Then DSTV can be connected to the monitor via the s-video connector.

Try and connect your DSTV to your PC via S-video... and let me know if it works :p

The Plasma panel has the following inputs according to Sony http://www.sony.co.za/prod.asp?DTID=1&CID=49&SID=110&PID=1662 :

1. RGB/YUV component through the 15 pin D-SUB connector
You would need a SCART to 15 pin D-sub (VGA connector) to run RGB out of the DSTV decoder. If you have a DVD player with component out (YUV) you can connect via a component (three RCA plugs, usually Red, Green and Blue coloured - but this not for RGB!!!) to 15 pin D-sub cable, AFAIK Sony supplies this as standard with the panels. I don't know whether DSTV decoders output component tho', mine only has RGB.

2. S-Video
You can connect your DSTV decoder via SCART out to S-Video in. (The DSTV decoder needs to be set up for this - see TivoZA's post above)

3. Composite
You'll probably need a BNC-RCA converter and a standard composite cable (RCA to RCA)

4. DVI
If you connect from your PC, you can use DVI.

These are your options

Well it would work if you run it through a TV tuner card, not aware of any PC's that have a S-video in as standard :p

He already said he can get it to work by running it through the DVD recorder. The monitor in question does support PAL (unlike a PC monitor) so there is no reason it shouldn't work.

As long as he doesn't have a 910i decoder there are many options.

Whats wrong with using a 910i decoder? Even if it doesn't have a scart connector you can still use a RCA-to-svideo cable.

The P42V1 is a high altitude model (no buzz), I've used them in the past for an expo.

Nothing wrong with using it, but it has only one set of RCA outs. If you want to connect a recorder you need to use the RF out.
Compare this to older models like the 660 or 720i where you have a multitude of outputs and it's a poor excuse for a upgraded DSD
