Panasonic Plasma at 50 inches. Better quality than all 3.

I'm no expert on screens, but I do work in the television industry. Sony is nice. Compatible with all HDMI products and quality is pretty good. Samsung looks great, but there is loads of compatibility issues. My choice with that budget... the biggest Viera plasma you can get, for that price.

edit: What PeterCH said...

Panasonic Viera - see what they have at AudioVision. I know they have a FULL HD, 42 inch model at R17K.

So you also a Plasma fan ? I'll definately consider it.

So whats the reason Plasma's are so much cheaper than LCD's ? I am going to view the LCD's at my friends store, he will most probably have the Panasonic range of Plasma's, i will surely check em out.

The image on the plasma is more "organic" and looks better to the human eye (my opinion). Colours look better. Also, the refresh rate is normally better. Good for fast moving images. In the end, go look at them side by side, playing the same source... and make your own decision.

I think thats my only choice right now, put them all next to each other and choose whats best, but im still boggled as to why Plasma's are so much cheaper ? does anyone have that answer ?

Large LCD's are expensive to manufacture. This does not make them better off course. Here is a link where the guy explains why they are more expensive (towards the end):

Good read, but now what concerns me is the 'Screen Burn-In' . Damn this is a tough decision. I'll check back with you tomorrow after i view all these TV's.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated !

Uhmm... No... But I have worked with plasmas, lcd's and projectors for about 6 years. 2 years installation and now technical support on all kinds of television and distribution equipment for a major supplier (not of the TV's themselves).

Dig deeper in this subforum and you'll see a post with a detailed review - comparison of plasma vs LCD - where Plasma wins every time. It has better contrast, better colour reproduction, widest angle which means everyone in the room sees the same picture and best brightness. What's more is that they're now affordable in full HD sizes.

Burn in is not an issue. I have a 42inch HD plasma from 2005/6 and it has no screen burn in. Model made by Hitachi, they've now discontinued plasmas as has Pioneer.

Plasma is cheaper because the yield is better. LCDs suffer dead pixels - and I guess the process is more expensive. Plasma is the next best thing to OLED and SED right now.
LCD tv sucks. Avoid like the plague.

It's actually R19K. I thought I saw it at the Waterfront branch in the window for R16999.
Anyway, the 50 inch is not full HD, the full HD will cost more. It depends on your room size, tiny room - get the 42, big room - get 50 or larger.

If my Hitachi were to pack up, I doubt it will because this is an early model made in Japan, I would buy the 42 inch Panny immediately. It would be cool to get a 50 at R35K though, if the 50inch is full HD. The 65 inch however costs about R86,000 and has slightly better contrast and full HD. The 50 inch will probably be halfway in price although Jump.co.za doesn't list it.
Maybe not available in SA? The 50 inch will prolly be R45-50K.
