Im on my way now to see my options. Im not interested in a 50" as
1) its too flashy
2) a little too big for my bedroom.

a 46" will just right, so i'll see if it is available.

Thanks for the info guys, but PeterCH , i get the impression that you are a bit bias towards Plasma ( just an impression :p )

Catch21, it's a bias because I see the difference and superior picture. Secondly, do look on this subforum, a technology based outfit did a review of the top sets - Plasma vs Sony Bravia X, etc and they came to the conclusion that plasma beats them all.
They used scientific instruments to quantify this too.
If you google AVForums you'll see that most people agree there.

LCD just has better marketing but plasma is better. And it's not like I don't have both - there is a 30 inch 2560 by 1600, S-IPS display based which I'm used too. It's great for photo and video editing and graphics, but like all LCDs it has drawbacks.

You know the 'funny' thing is , every electronic store i phoned, every sales person gaves me a different story. Not one of them suggested Plasma or Plasma being better than LCD.

They are so ignorant its really not 'funny' ...

OMG... catch 21 if you are following that advise... you deserve what you get !

think of it in cars...

do you want to own the 2000 M3 the 2006 M3 or the 2009 M3

yes they all do the same thing basically, but the 2009 will have better tech and be better at what it does !

go have a look at an LED screen and tell me plasma is better ! i spot a hectic hectic hectic fan boy here. the LED for one fact you cant deny is like 10x thinner ;)

Ok ill give you an unbiased break down (i own an LCD, Dad has a plasma and an Led) if you are going to be viewing a lot of SD stuff and using it mainly for watching SD tv, get a plasma cause they aren't as sharp the picture looks better. If you are going to use it for mainly HD stuff and like xbox/PS3 blu ray or as a computer screen. Go LCD. if you can afford it, and LED is like an improved LCD, the brightness is sooooo awesome!

so ya... i own an LCD but if i could afford it i would take the LED anyday !

pls make a wise decision here bud its a lot of money.. he likes plasma probably cause he has one and lives in a cave :p

anyway, at my dads house at one stage we put the LED and the plasma next to each other... the Plasma (with its ridiculous claim of like 2 million:1 brightness) looked like it was on dim. the colour reproduction was amazing, i wanted to eat the apples on the LED, on the plasma the just kinda blended :/ but ya on SD tv the LED looks more blocky cause ya !

so ya take it from that... or how about buy a ****Ty plasma for 13k and buy me a 40' led ;)

4cer : Unfortunately for you, you're mistaken... yes the cheap Plasma's aren't that great... but the high end plasma's like the Viera knock the socks of ANY LCD and LED(which is just an LCD with an LED backlight)...

sigh :( i give up on this site... "i'm a fan boy and no one else know's anything" i've seen it for myself.. i think i can judge

oeh you mean compared to my dads plasma didn't count its the Panasonic VIERA G10 Series TC-P42G10. must be a dud one then :/ My dad also bought into the salesmens bull, and when he saw the LED that i advised, and saw them next to each other... wow was he pissed.

Maybe in your eyes..

There is a reason the Viera has been rated the BEST screen on the market for many many years now.. rated higher than LCD's.

And no, I'm not saying you're a fanboi, but "new" technology is not instantly better....

I actually do agree with 4cer ... :/ It depends what you want to do with it.

Just gone from an LG 42" plasma to a Ssmasung 46" LCD and I'm pretty chuffed. I don't use TV (DSTV or analogue TV) and use it for Xbox, DVDs, computer and streaming media. BD to follow shortly.

The big thing for me (PeterCH will say its a non issue now) was image retention ... different to burn in.

I guess people will say it's because it was cheap - but R12,000 for a plasma then wasn't too bad.

OK guys im back and bought the 46" Samsung Series 8000 LED.

Firstly, i did not want a screen bigger than 46" , and my friend only had LG and Samsung Plasma's that were 50" and bigger in Full HD ( not sure if any other brand has 46" in Full HD ? ).

I must say this TV is amazing ! Even the SD picture is enhanced and I must admit I was really reluctant to buy a Samsung screen ( Im a Sony fan ) but i think i made the right choice.

I'll probably consider getting a Full HD plasma for my living room once i feel my kids can make proper benefit of it. Oh btw is it true that LCD is better than Plasma for PS3 ? Since my boy ( and i :D ) will be gaming, not sure then what i will need to get. Let the time come and i'll query from you guys again.

Thanks for all the input, glad to see some LCD fans around too.:)

EDIT: BTW, all Panasonic fans, is it true that Panasonic is non-existant in S.A ? I heard they had to retrench all staff as they (Panasonic) could not survive.

Funny thing is I wanted the Sony 46X450 and when they checked where the stock was located, they couldnt find my X , so i guess it wasnt meant for me.

Is your B650 a LED ?

It's very possible. Panasonic like SHARP does not exist in SA. Sharp is the LCD make I could go for, they make excellent quality high res cell phone screens for the domestic Japanese market - once you use one of those screens anything by HTC/Apple/Sony/Samsung just isn't good.

You know what, Apple also does not have a presence in SA, neither does Nintendo, both are run by the Core Group as the official distributors.

Bear in mind that you don't have a LED TV (despite Samsung lies) but a LED backlit LCD TV. You have what's very common in netbooks and laptops these days and the new Apple 24 inch display.

No, it's not true. Unless you're afraid of logo burn in from those game indicators. I have a 3-4 year old Hitachi model plasma and the CNN/SKY/MM/MNET logos have not burned in despite the TV being on for 12 hrs at a time playing CNN.

Also did some PS2 gaming on it before - years ago and had no issues.

Im aware of that, was always. :) but even CNET's reviews state that Samsungs LED's are amazing and produce very deep blacks.

A good way to convince yourself is to check out some of the 2nd/3rd gen Pany plasmas in shopping malls, for example in Canal Walk - eg Woolworths. Those are the old panels and they show static images constantly, you won't find burn-in there.

Is your B650 a LED ?

Nope - LCD.

http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/12789/size/big/cat//ppuser/7981
http://www.samsung.com/za/consumer/...evision&subtype=lcdtv&model_cd=LA46B650T1RXXA

I first went in convinced I wanted the Sony Bravia 46V550 - until he showed me the diffence between 50hz and 100hz. I then changed to the 46W550 which offered 100hz (but identical in every other way) ... until I realised it was R7,000.00 for this feature!

Then he pointed out this set and I compared them to both Sonys and the LED 700o series. To my eyes the 7000 series and the W series were identical - both being better than the V due to 100hz.

Then he mentioned the price, showed me the network capabilities (Internet TV, USB2.0, ethernet, content library etc) and I was sold.

My only gripe is the HDMI switching (someone mentioned this earlier - and it effects me). I connected all my components to amp (HDMI) and a single HDMI to the TV - but the TV picked everything up as DVI (no sound). There's an issue with the handshake.

But - I'm not sure if it's the amplifier or the TV. I'm upgrading the firmware on the amp next week and let you know if it's fixed. Otherwise a Marantz SR5002 will be on the classified soon ....
